Father is going to bless our house, today.

We have never had this done, before. My child is sooo excited and my wife is a nervous wreck.

What can we expect and what should we do?

Tell her not to worry unless as your priest is blessing the the walls start to shake and things start flying around;)

Father came and blessed the house, today. It was GREAT! He stayed a lot longer than we expected. He blessed every room, we had some good food and played some games.

My child says she can now sleep without the light on, as he guaranteed her all the monsters and bears are gone. He seems to be the only one who could do that. I tried everything to get rid of those pesky monsters and bears, but Father made it look easy.

Father says he doesn’t do that many house blessings. He said it’s not in fashion, anymore, and very few people ask him for that. I told him I felt a little guilty asking him to take the time out of his very busy schedule for this, and he assured me that house blessings are one of his favorite things to do.

I would encourage everyone to get their home blessed. It is an experience not to be missed. There is not much that can compare to having a real Priest come to your home and bless the whole thing.http://forums.catholic-questions.or...atholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

I am almost Catholic (hubby is) and I would be interested in getting our home blessed.

Can you fill me in on the reasons for doing it and how you feel it has helped, if any?

I guess I am looking for the “why?”… I would like to ask our priest to do this for us, but I’d like a better reason than “some person on the internet mentioned it and I liked the idea”, lol.

thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with us.
And I’m glad you got rid of those pesky monsters and bears. :clapping:

We had our house blessed, and it was wonderful!

The priest obviously loved doing it, and wishes more would ask.

For us, two priests came over and had dinner and talked, then one priest left and the other took holy water and stuff and walked through and blessed every room! That was probably 10+ years ago. Father is now retired, but I see him weekly at a Mass he still says and I play organ for.

It was too cool.

Caution: we had the upstairs closed off because it was mostly storage and too messy when Father came over so we were embarrassed. I started to move things up there, even though there was no air conditioning, for privacy. This year on Good Friday, a fire started upstairs and destroyed the upstairs. We are temporarily in two apartments now (four of us in each), next door to the site of a murder/suicide last night. Coincidence? I don’t know but when we get the house put back together I think we’ll have it blessed again, starting at the top this time.

For those who have heard my story ad nauseum already, I apologize. Hopefully I’ll get over it soon.

My goodness Alan, your life is certainly not boring! At least your wife and children are ok. That’s the best advertisement I’ve ever read for getting the house blessed from top to bottom, chimney 'n all!

I will pray for the souls of the 2 men who died, especially the man who turned the gun on himself.

I would be interested in finding out why you would have this done as well.

Does it cost anything?

This sounds really nice. When my husband and I buy a house SOMEday I’d love to have this done.

jbjwstar, I don’t think it would cost anything. You might want to give the priest a dinner invitation though, or something. 🙂

Just another question (not too dumb, I hope) about house blessings, for those who have had this done. Is this something you’re supposed to have done as soon as you move in? Would it be stupid to ask the priest to bless your house 4 or 5 years after you move in?

Honestly, we’ve never had it done before.

I was enjoying Marguritas one day with an amigo Mexicano who couldn’t believe we’ve never had it done, ever. He said it’s never too late, and you need to do it every year or two. He says it’s standard for the Mexicans and some don’t even want to stay in the new casa until it’s done.

Really, we all had a lot of fun. Father got to see a side of us that he doesn’t get to see at Church, and we saw a different side of him, too. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had…My home is now BLESSED.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

Being a Byzantine Catholic we have our homes blessed every year. The priest brings over holy water that is blessed at church, and usually this is done before Lent starts.

The priest come over and there is a very short prayer service with a candle, we sing a song, the priest goes room to room and blesses with holy water, and then we kiss his cross. Then usually we have a meal with our priest. Like the other posts have mention it is a great way to get to know your priest. It also helps the kids with the monsters. But most importantly it makes our home feel even more that “protected” with Gods graces.

does the hoe become a sacrimental? cuz that would be really annoyong having to burn it when you are done rather than sell it for fear of simony 🙂

Ours was at least 4-5 years after we moved in. The issue never even came up. Any time seems to be a good time.
