For every legitimately agrieved father out there (and I do know at least one) there are dozens who simply don’t want to pay child support. Father’s Rights don’t really get my sympathy, even though my cousin John, who is unable to rescue his daughter from her sick and drug-addled mother, does get my sympathy.

I think including Joseph in the Nativity pictures is a great idea. Nobody said anything about relegating Mary, just about including Joseph.

You ever seen any of the Northern Renaissance images of the Holy Family where Joseph looks angry? They’re pretty funny.

I have seen those paintings! I have a print of a 15th century Dutch painting depicting Mary holding Jesus on her lap, all happy looking. Meanwhile Joseph is in the background with a long stick. He’s probably trying to knock fruit out of a tree, but instead it kind of looks like he’s practicing his golf swing! I for one love images of St Joseph with Jesus - too often people forget that fathers need to be involved in the raising of their infants and children.

There’s another really famous one in the Cloisters Museum in NYC: it’s a painting of the Annunciation. Mary and Gabriel are in one panel. In a side panel, which is made to look like an adjoining room of the same house, Joseph is in his carpenter workshop. He looks really, really grumpy and he’s drilling a bunch of holes into a board in a rather aimless fashion. It’s very Freudian, really, and pretty funny.
