I saw a presentation on EWTN (actually caught the end of it) and it showed the devotion at Fatima. I want to know why to the pilgrims walk on their knees, what do they pray on that road, how did it start, how long is it? Any information on it would be great. Thanks much!

I think it’s a form of penance and reverence for Jesus and his holy mother.
 
They walk on their knees as a form of penance or when they are asking for a particular favor, or sometimes they do it as an act of thanksgiving. It is a very difficult thing to do and it is a way of showing their sincerity.CPM
