What are your favorite/recommended podcasts? I’m looking for ones that are Catholic in nature, or at least God-centered and not anti-Catholic.

My list:

(Catholic)

The TechnoPriest: Father Bill Kessler from Illinois. Mostly recordings of his homilies, with the odd technological review tossed in.

Verbum Domini: The day’s readings read by Brian Noe.

One-O-Five Live: The daily English language program from Vatican Radio.

(non-Catholic)

Focus Focus on the Family: The daily broadcast of Focus on the Family.

Focus on the Family’s Radio Theatre: Radio drama from Focus on the Family. The last few weeks they’ve been giving us episodes from The Secret Garden.

Focus on the Family’s Family News in Focus: A 1-minute or so daily news program dealing with Christian and family issues.

Adventures in Odyssey: The daily broadcast of heart-moving radio drama aimed at 8-12 year-olds, but I love it.

Focus Adventures in Odyssey: Same as above but the weekly broadcast instead of the daily.

James Dobson Family Minute: A 60-second daily commentary.

Can’t believe you didn’t list Catholic Insider, by some Dutch priest. The show is consistently ranked in the top 10 or 20 podcasts. Pretty amazing for a Catholic show in a popular medium. He also taught the Vatican folks tips on putting together their podcast.

He does something weird with his .mp3’s and they won’t play on my player, so I’ve never gotten to listen to the cast.

Two weeks ago, Father Bill (the technopriest) thanked him for help with his podcasts, too. Now the TechnoPriest podcast won’t play on my player!

Can we go back to the basics for a minute.
What IS podcasting? Can it be played on a computer and/or online?

People talk about these things but no one explains What they are.

If we must 🙂

It’s a method of distributing .mp3 files online. It is most beneficial for shows that are “aired” on a repeating basis (e.g., daily, weekly, or even randomly). The software automatically looks for new episodes of the all shows you like and downloads them all to your local system.

The distributed .mp3 files can be played on any .mp3 player, including your computer. They are distributed online, but not played online.

And I offer the following reasons:

  1. *]Because if you don’t know what it is, you obviously don’t know of any good podcasts, and the topic isn’t directed towards you.
*]It’s already been discussed in a couple other threads, and repeatedly defining the same terms over and over makes for a dull read.
*]It only takes a few seconds to go to Google and do search to figure out what anything is. In fact, less time than it probably took you to post the question, and much less time thqn it took for you to post then wait for someone to reply.

    Hope this was helpful!

I found a new one. It’s called “Heart, Mind, and Strength”. It’s a radio show from Ave Maria Radio, hosted by Catholic psychotherapist Dr. Gregory Popcak and his wife Lisa. It’s an hour-long call-in format show, mainly focused around marriage, parenting, and relationships. The hosts rant a lot, though, and only manage to fit 1-4 calls into the hour. Not as good as “The Doctor is In”, but until there’s a podcast for that show, this one will do.

The RSS feed is at feeds.feedburner.com/hmsradio

I found another one. I can’t stand it, but others might enjoy it. The Breadcast is pretty much a commentary on the weekly readings massively overproduced with background sound effects, music, and narration in a new-agey deep meditative voice.

The rss feed is here: hermitinthecity.libsyn.com/feed.mrss

I’ve thought about talking to my pastor to offer putting together a parish based podcast. What would you say would make for a good program? How long should it be? What kind of topics/flow/production stuff should it include? How frequently ought it be put out?

I would love to hear more podcasts from everyday Catholics where they talk about their lives and how to integrate Catholicism into their day-to-day experiences. A Catholic podcast doesn’t have to be strictly about Catholicism. Catholics are more than just people who read the Bible and Catechism and attend Mass. They’re people with families and people who struggle with what to fix for dinner, or who are interested in movies or books or whatever, and a podcast is a great method of showing how Catholic can take their faith and what the Church gives them, to illustrate how to apply the teachings of the Church to the decisions they make (when making dinner or watching movies, or whatever 😃 ).

That’s the approach we take with the Rosary Army podcast, and Fr. Roderick’s Daily Breakfast uses this format. Most of the other Catholic podcasts (there are a few exceptions, of course) are purely catechetical and of a teaching nature. Jayson Franklin’s now defunct Catholic Cast was a good example of a fun, varied podcast that mixed seriousness with humor. Those are the kids of podcasts I’d like to hear more of. Just recording a homily and sticking it on the Internet is nice, but it doesn’t really offer listeners anything different from the hundreds of other preach-casts that are out there. Mixing things up regularly, experimenting, being willing to look foolish (silly voices and songs, for example) all go a long way towards making a show interesting. George Leite with the Going Fourth and Catholic Rockers podasts has been experimenting a lot lately, and because of this his shows have been really fun to listen to in recent weeks.

As far as structure, try to keep podcasts under 35 minutes long (about the length of a commute). Any longer makes it hard to listen to an entire show. There are a couple of Catholic podcasts that regularly go on for over an hour, and I eventually had to unsubscribe from those.

As far as frequency, any less than once a week makes it very hard to keep an audience. If you can podcast more than once a week, that’s great.

I dont know if you know this but all of EWTN’s shows are now podcast. Here is the link ewtn.com/podcast/

And also our very own Catholic Answers are available in MP3 format that you can download directly to yout MP3 player.

Podcasting is the very best disruptive technology ever invented and the reason why I purchased an IPOD.

“Disruptive” technology?

Disruptive Technology is technology that enhances and helps us to enjoy a previous invention even more. For example the VCR or the DVD Player enhances and helps us to enjoy TV more. The PVR is an example of this as well.

Y’all for got Catholic Exchange’s podcast. Its very good. To find it just Google Catholic Exchange.

God Bless

I love podcasts! I wasn’t even expecting them when I bought an iPod. Now I don’t even listen to music anymore, just podcasts 😛
Some of my favorites are definitley Rosary Army Podcast and Catholic Insider. They are fun, informative, and very interesting Catholic shows. I also enjoy Catholic:Under the Hood, Rock Solid, Cardinal Arinze’s Podcast, and True Knight’s Combat Training which are all very good and informative Catholic podcasts. All you need is a computer and iTunes to listen to them.

iTunes is optional. There are many pieces of software that will fetch and/or play podcasts.

Hey all you fellow prodcasters. I just discovered these and they are also available on Itunes.

I bought an ipod to listen to music but CA, EWTN Podcsts and now Immaculate Heart Radio, all I listen to is Podcasts.

Al Cresta
Teresa Tomeo
Ray Guarendi

All we need now is CA to start doing podcasts and we are all set. When it does, we should all team up and make CA #1 on ITunes. I would love to see their faces at Apple.
