I just thought I might throw this out were I find I love to read books on Catholicism / Christianity. Maybe we suggest some reading bmaterial for each others enjoyment.

Some books I have enjoyed:

Mere Christianity
Miracles
Screwtape Letters
The Great Divorce
Orthodoxy
Confessions
Story of a Soul
Rediscovering Catholicism
Imitiation of Christ
Others

all above are excellent…

I would add:

Thomas Merton Thomas Dubay, Flannery O’Connor and Walker Percy.

If you haven’t read Thomas Dubay’s “The Evidential Power of Beauty”…an aristic masterpiece awaits you!

Some of my favorites are *The Everlasting Man, By What Authority?, *and Making Senses out of Scripture.

*The Everlasting Man *basically covers the history of the world from a Catholic perspective. It’s impossible to summarize G. K. Chesterton’s book in a paragraph, so I’ll just say that it’s one of the best books there is.

*By What Authority? *was written by Mark Shea, a convert to Catholicism. He provides excellent arguments for the authority of the Church.

Shea also wrote Making Senses out of Scripture. He shows that when one reads the Bible as strictly allegorical or strictly literal, one can never truly understand Scripture. He proves that it is only when we read the Scriptures within the Living Tradition of the Church that we can correctly interpret them.

Shallow?

Lord of the Rings trilogy is far from shallow…you have great taste!

Of course, there is the totally secular perspective of Tolkien’s books and the all-encompassing Christian perspective. In fact, in the last movie, I was moved differently than when I first read the book.

There are so many metaphors in those books; you can take creative license, of course, or read it just for pure “fantasy” pleasure. One line in the movie that stood out for me in the Return of the King was when Frodo reflected upon the whole adventure. He stated something like “once you begin to understand, you can’t go back.”

Amen.

I know it’s not shallow. But compared to the Bible and Imitation of Christ…??

Catholic Answers had a great speaker this past week that spoke of LOTR, Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. I think it was Thursday, June 24th if anyone wants to listen to the archived program.

Hi,

These are wonderful books:
The Bible (of course!)
St. Faustina’s Diary
The Imitation of Christ
Blessing or Curse (Derek Prince) - taught me a lot about the impact of words on your life and others’ lives
The Bondage Breaker (Neil Anderson) - great book on spiritual warfare
Anything by Fr. Benedict Groeschel
You Can be the Wife of a Happy Husband (Darien Cooper) - wow - taught me how to be a wife as God wants me to be
Anything by Grcae Livingston Hill - she was a Christian romance writer from the early 20th century. Books are so light and refreshing - you will love their innocence and their Christian message
There are so many more… but these came to mind first.
Have a great day,
herbgal
