Hmmm. I wonder if anyone’s into this.

Here are some choral Masses I’m familiar with. Which of these do you enjoy most and why? I don’t yet have the ability to distinguish between classical pieces. I just know whether I like it or not.

Which of these Masses do you listen to? Please post others in a post if not included in the poll.

I have a couple my Mozart and Beethoven. Unfortunately, the CD are at work (I like listeniing to classical music while I program  ) and I do not have the specific ones. I also have a number of Gregorian Chant CD’s.

I am planning on getting others and this thread should help.

Bach’s Mass in B Minor, hands down.

The *Pie Jesu *from Lloyd-Webber is good, don’t like most of the rest of it.

How does the B Minor compare with the other Masses? What makes you enjoy it over the others?
I’m a die-hard Bach freak. See, the only person who could possibly give JSB a run for his money would GFHandel (I hope Heaven involves them both playing on alternate Sundays). I just don’t think the others (Mozart et al) are in the same class, good though they may be. I’ve you want contemporary composers who done interesting things with the Mass, I rec. Arvo Part and maybe John Rutter. Still, Bach they ain’t

I picked “other”, because I think that some of these choral Masses are so overwhelming, they degenerate into a performance that overpowers the actual Mass.

Just my opinion.

Any of Haydn’s Masses (Lord Nelson, Mass in Time of War, Harmoniemasse). Two by Lully whose names I can’t remember. Vittoria’s Missa O Quam Gloriosam Est Regnam. Praetorius’ Mass for Christmas Eve.

I have a video of Mozart’s Coronation Mass which was the music for a Mass celebrated by JPII in St. Peter’s. There is a new Mass entitled “Creole Mass” which was just recently composed and a concert was given in St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans a few months prior to Katrina. It was very nice but I can’t remember the composer’s name.

Today, these choral Masses are indeed meant to be performances, not used at liturgical services. That’s why I placed this thread in Popular Media rather than Liturgy.

I saw the Missa Solemnis performed at Carnegie Hall this year. Magnificent. And I’m a big fan of Mozart’s music…so I checked off the C minor…

Hey…where are the requiems?

Faure - Sung that. Durufle. Mozart of course. Lully. The great biggy - Berlioz. Verdi.

I was in the advanced Choir at my college and we joined with another huge choir to sing the Bach Mass in B minor. It was one of the most amazing experiences in music that I have ever had. On some of the pieces, just my choir sang which ws composed of about 20 people. On some pieces their were about 100 of us singing. We also hired a professional Orchestra and some of the professors from my University sang the solos. It was so awe inspiring.

There’s a Berlioz Mass? What is it?
Berlioz wrote a Requiem Mass for one of Napoleon’s generals. The Dies Irae is simply spectacular and his use of brass (echoing the martial music of the Napoleonic era) is simply breathtaking.
