Early, I know, but what are some of your favorite Christmas dishes?

My family grew up having turkey on X-Mas and my husband always had ham. This year I’d like to do something totally different.

Main dishes, side dishes, bring them on! —KCT

Roast goose with apple stuffing and red wine sauce. Goose used to be the traditional Christmas dinner, like turkey is today. It’s delicious, that is if you like dark meat…

It also goes well with my cranberry chutney!🙂

My mom often made a barbequed brisket on Christmas, along with a honey-baked ham. Pretty yummy!

Christmas Eve is always lasagna with salad & rolls.

Christmas Day used to be prime rib, but DH told me 2 years ago that he doesn’t really like it (after 23 years of marriage   ). We’ve been having filet mignon with bearnaise sauce, twice baked taters, & veggies for the last couple of years.

Fudge!

O.K. Not really a meal. But it’s my favorite thing to eat around Christmas! I grew up eating ham. Since I am a hunter, I decided to do something different a couple of years ago. We had elk for Christmas. Everyone loved it, so now we try to have something different, or a sampling of several. This year, we are going to have a sample platter of sausages with kangaroo, elk, hog, and buffalo. No I didn’t shoot a kangaroo. You can order these things on-line, or some specialty stores carry it. You might want to look into it. It makes it fun and interesting. We still have a smaller traditional ham for the main course.

my family is English, we always had roast beef and yorkshire pudding for Christmas.

Oh my gosh Sue…and my family thought we were the only ones having lasagna on Christmas Eve! Nice to see we’re not the only ones 👋

On Christmas Day my mom made/makes turkey because us kids didn’t like ham. Still don’t, really.

pierogies, slathered in butter, covered in saurkraut and dripping with sour cream.

oh my, good stuff.

Loin of pork flavored with fresh rosemary…

New potatoes with skins on cut up, par-boiled, then mixed with some Lipton’s onion soup (dried) right from the packet,

Large green salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, raddishes, etc.

and…some eggplant parmesan.

For dessert: Cherry cheesecake pie

Oh…I forgot…

after par-boiling the potatoes and adding the flavoring to them, put them in a pan in the oven until they are golden toasted.

we always had clam chowder on Christmas eve, and sometimes codfish balls (traditional in my dad’s family). Nice and warm before midnight Mass, I think we used to have to abstain from meat on vigils.

something that has become a family tradition I started, the first year I was married, MIL loved it now everyone wants it evey year. When bundt cake pans first came out, the recipe is a duncan hines yellow cake mix (do they even still make this brand?), package of instant pistachio pudding, sour cream (8 oz? not sure), Wesson butter flavored oil (I always cheated and used melted butter), I believe 1/4 cup, and whatever eggs and liquid called for on the package directions of the cake mix. the recipe came on the pudding box around this time of year.
then you chop 1/2 cup of walnut meats with 1/4 cup sugar and some cinnamon.(am giving quantities by memory, you want about 3/4 cup of nut mix)
You grease the bundt pan, spoon half the batter evenly around it, sprinkle it with 1/2 of the nut mix, spoon on the rest of the batter, and top with more nuts.
you were supposed to put some candied cherries in the pan before you started, I think.
bake according to package directions for a bundt pan, cool on a rack, and invert on a pretty plate. I believe you could decorate with peppermint candy leaves around the cherries.
don’t try this recipe until you check the quantities

As a kid, growing up with immigrant Polish grandparents…
whole baked fish, perogies, oplatek, rye bread, pan fried potatoes, sourkraut soup (kapusta), and birthday cake (my brother was born on Christmas eve)

At my aunts…turkey, lasagna, polish sausage

With my hubby and kids…roast goose with horseradish applesauce, or beef rib roast. The side items change. Usually will make a yule log cake for dessert.

Sometimes we still do the traditional Polish meal. We are far away from all family and it helps us feel connected. We usually do that on Christmas eve.
