Which encyclical letter has had the greatest effect on you? The one that effected me the most is Pius XI’s Mit Brennender Sorge which was a condemnation of racism and the immorality of the nazi regime.

Padre Pio “Don’t worry, work and pray.”

John Paul II’s Theology of the human body is another good one too.

Padre Pio “Don’t worry, work and pray.”

the social encylicals, particularly Rerum Novarum, Mater et Magistra, Popularum Progresso, and John Paul’'s On Human Work.

Humanae vitae is the most prophetic document of the 20th century from any source

I agree with you a hundred percent that document is the most powerful of them all. A direct condemnation of abortion and birth control.

Padre Pio “Don’t worry, work and pray.”

Humanae Vitae is the only one I’ve read so I’ll have to vote on it.

I’m always trying to recite (at least some parts of) Humanae Vitae

Mystici Corporis Christi by Pope Pius XII.

Clear, masterful and eloquent in the way it expounds upon the doctrine of the Church as being the mystical body of Christ.

Gerry 🙂

And one of the most misunderstood, even by those who have never read it.

On that score I fully agree with you on your assessment of Pius XII.

I have to give this a two thumbs up as well. it lead a Methodist friend of mine in to the Catholic Church. I think only us older folks can realize how radical of a document it was (and certainly some of the conservatives of the day made their displeasure known) but in many ways this letter laid the foundation for the Council.

Another that touched me is Pius XII’s Summi Pontificatus which condemned Hitler’s actions.

Padre Pio “Don’t worry, work and pray.”

Hard to make a clear call but my top four would be Splendor of Truth, Faith and Reason, Gospel of Life and On Human Life (Humane Vitae).

Paragraph 17 of Humane Vitae is, as already stated, the most prophetic 100 words written in the last 500 years.
