I don’t have a picture to show you, but I was reading EB Sledge’s “With the Old Breed. On Peleliu and Okinawa.” Sledge devotes quite a bit of space to Japanese infiltrators on Peleliu – these were suicide missions, a single Japanese or a pair would try to sneak into Marine lines and kill an American before being killed themselves.
When the Marines were withdrawn from Peleliu, Army troops replaced them. Sledge reports how different the Army was, including one Marine saying breathlessly. “The Army is stringing barbed wire!”
That immediately brought to mind a Far Side cartoon. Neanderthals are cooking meat by holding it in their hands over the fire. Naturally, they’re burning their hands too.
One man is sitting quietly with his meat skewered on a stick and holdling it over the fire. Another one says, “Hey! Look want Grog do!!”
