In light of the recent announcement concerning the closing of CAF at the end of this year, I thought it might be appropriate and fun to conjure up some favorite songs from whatever musical genre (pop, folk, country, rock, classical) with fare thee well lyrics. If you have a clip as well, even better.

One of my favorites is “Farewell” by Bob Dylan: “O fare thee well my own true love, I’m leaving the first hour of the morn, I’m bound off for the Bay of Mexico, or maybe the coast of Cal-i-forn.” There are several variations, including those of Pete Seeger and Judy Collins, as well as a Liverpool melody, which probably influenced Dylan.

Some of your favorites?

This is my favorite. The subtle theme is goodbyes are never final goodbye because we will meet again in heaven.

The Tom Waits song reminds me of moving out of the seminary. Letterman went off air the summer before my last year.

The Pretenders song is the only good part of the movie G. I. Jane.

I greatly admire Frank Sinatra’s singing. There is also a version of this classic song performed by a young Bing Crosby that is incredibly good.

Dolly Parton is such a gifted performer and songwriter.

If you like garage rock, this was my old friends’ band, the song is from 1981. (No, they weren’t in the Banana Splits, someone just used that video.)

It’s pretty ironic to hear Lou Reed singing about Trump and Giuliani being dead when they’re still here on the news every day and it’s Lou who’s dead instead.
