Christ is risen!

Have you found a favorite Pascha video on YouTube?

After listening to and watching this many dozen times since Pascha

I have stumbled on this.

I think it’s wonderful from start to finish.

Click on “more info” to read background (made as a part of an action of raising funds for reconstruction of medieval Serbian orthodox monastery ‘‘Pillars of Saint George’’) and for a translation of the lyrics.

These two together make an interesting contrast and compliment! 🙂

Glory to God!

This is the first of seven parts, each 9 - 10 minutes, which form a documentary on the celebration of Pascha on the Holy Mountain (Athos) and cover (amongst other things) the liturgical celebrations of Holy and Great Friday through to Bright Monday. Interesting to watch if you have the time.

You can pick up the links for the following six parts from part 1 (Psxa Sto Agio Oros title01)

CHRIST IS RISEN!

this is mine:

because this is my family’s village, I’ve served as a cantor in this church when I visited and I even see several of my cousins on the video:D
Truly he is risen! Let us rejoice!

I’m loving all these different links people have put up!

What a beautiful village. (I’m a city dweller, sadly)

What is the young couple doing in the final 15 seconds of the video where he tosses water at her? Someone asked in another thread "Easter: throwing water at Easter " about water tossing but those responses were about the tradition of women throwing water at men the Monday after Pascha. What are these two folks doing?

It’s called OBLICKOVANY or Sprinkling Day and it’s on Easter Monday.

On Easter Monday, the young men of the villages go from house to house with whips made of braided willow branches and adorned with ribbons and they symbolically “whip” the young girls from the house telling them basically it’s Spring and there’s work to be done and to get busy. They will also douse them with water as a symbolic washing away of Winter and bringing in Spring. The girls can ransome themselves with gifts of pastries, kraslice (decorated eggs) and booze. If a girl protests too much, she will find herself carried to the nearest stream and tossed in…

Don’t worry ladies, on Easter Tuesday, the girls chase the boys through the village and douse them with perfume. The guys ransom themselves with hair ribbons and hankies and kraslice with love poems on them.

Hope this helps…

ps
another good OBLICKOVANY link:

ignore the music on this one and watch til the end and you will see the “goodies” that the girl’s family gives the guy… to NOT have your single daughter “doused” by the village guys is a very great INSULT…

These are very ancient customs that are still practiced today, even here in some areas of the US… I’ve been know to take a squirt gun to DL on Bright Monday to squirt the old Baba’s as they come out of church:rolleyes:

Thanks for this explanation and the links. Burrr! Being a bit of a Baba myself I’ll remember to avoid visiting your parish next Bright Monday! 😉

I see it also called Dyngus/Dingus/Smigus Day, Wet Monday.

I’ve watched a number of other really interesting YouTube Pasha videos looking at the “Related Videos” at URLs everyone posted here. Thanks!
