What is your favorite scary book?

Mine are Bag of Bones by Stephen King and Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

Though this is not a favorite, The Amityville Horror was certainly, one of the creepiest.

One of the most disturbing short stories I’ve ever read is Thanksgiving by Joyce Carol Oates. You won’t be able to grocery shop for a week (if you’ve read it you will know what I mean).

H. P. Lovecraft scared the daylights out of me. I first discovered his novels when I was in the Navy. I had a night watch from 10 pm to 2 am. I got back to the barracks about 2:15, couldn’t fall asleep, and began reading. There was a sudden clap of thunder and my entire body flew up off the bunk and came crashing back down. Not bad for a writer from the 30s. Robert Bloch, who wrote Psycho, wrote in Lovecraft’s genre as well as many others.

Second, is Anne Rice’s Lestat series.

Yup yup! Cthulhu was my fave…

One really scary book I’ve read just recently is Salem’s Lot…

Yup, there’s some good Stephen King ones out there. I liked Christine and Carrie. The book of the Shining I found way different from the movie, and actually a lot better (Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable performance notwithstanding).

Stephen King… can’t think of the name… it was about the writer who was held hostage by the woman. UGGG… what is that book?? Anyhow, she wouldn’t let him go and she got him a typewriter so he could still write?

So creepy. I am certain that my very smart fellow CA posters will come up with the name…

Only the book that was made into my favourite Stephen King *movie *of all time …

MISERY!!!

By the way I’m not smart, just love that movie.

That would be Misery. 😉

Scariest book ever; The Shining by Stephen King.
2nd scariest: The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons

  • It* by Stephen King scared the daylights out of me. I’m not to fond of clowns anyway, and Pennywise was tailor made to keep me up at night.

I read Salem’s Lot about 30 years ago. It was far and above the best and scariest book that Steven King has ever written, and probably the scariest book that I have ever read.

My appointment book. That is about as much scary stuff as I can handle. 😃

I don’t know if it’s “scary” as much as disturbing, but I had a real hard time sleeping after reading “The Anastasia Syndrome” by Mary Higgins Clark. Any time now that I have a memory lapse, I get a minor panicky feeling!

In fact, most of the other stories in the short story collection that includes “The Anastasia Syndrome” were disturbing… especially the one about the winning lottery ticket and the one about the woman on the eve of her wedding in danger of being murdered (sorry, that one stretched credibility beyond reasonable limits… my husband would have NEVER caught on to the clue about the wedding dress sleeves! Maybe THAT’S what bothers me most about it…)

I read Salems Lot a few years ago. Far better than the movie. It was a bit creepy, but didn’t scare the living day lights out of me.
The bad thing about me is that I don’t scare easily at all, so I’m always ona quest to find a book or movie that will really truely scare me. I think I’ll try It next, I’ve heard that that one was pretty scary.

My favorite scary book happens to be nonfiction. Malachi Martins, “Hostage to the Devil”.

I agree, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons.

I also like The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, and also her short story, “The Lottery.”

“Dracula”, or any of the short stories of H.G. Wells; & the ghost stories of M. R. James.

In small doses, H. P. Lovecraft can be very effective; the same goes for Edgar Allen Poe.

*If *films count on this thread 🙂 , “Misery” is thoroughly enjoyable; “The Green Mile” was equally gripping, in a different way. “TGM” is one of those films that lives with one - it was really good.

The end of “Rebecca” is etched into my memory 🙂 - “Jane Eyre” puts me in mind of “Rebecca”, because I saw the film before I read the novel. ##

“Dracula” has got to be the scariest book ever written. Every time I re-read it, I feel as though I’m trapped in the castle.

A close second: “Apt Pupil” by Stephen King. All parents who think they know their kids should read this.

Cleaning out the bookcase at home, I came across that old horror classic (one you DON’T want your kids to get hold of)…

My high school yearbook.

“Where the Wild Things Are” has NOTHING on this!

thought you were asking about Richard Scary, my son had a big book of trucks, construction equipment, farm equipment etc which was his favorite and mine.

on topic, I like Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen’s spoof of gothic novels
