Of all the passages of the bible, is there one that really sums up life for you? One that strikes a chord with your soul?

I remember when I was young, on a particularly trying day, I picked up my bible, and dropped it on my bed. I read the first thing that my eyes rested on, and the passage has stuck with me ever since. (20 years and counting.)

Job 11 13:20

If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him, if you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent, surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.

For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away. Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning, and you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety, and you shall take your rest with none to disturb.

Many shall entreat your favor, but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.

Do you have one that strikes a similar chord in your soul? One that seems to hold all the support and love and grace that our Father has for us?

At varous times in my life particullar passages may have meant more than others. One that always comes back around is John 2:5, " His mother said … ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ "

God bless all on these forums.

Ecclesiastes Chapter 3

You beat me to it. Well I guess we can share:

1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. 1 Peter 1:5-9

“By the power of God you are guarded through faith for salvation, which is ready to be revealed in the last time. Over this you rejoice; though now for a little while, if need be, you are made sorrowful by various trials, that the temper of your faith–more precious by far than gold which is tried by fire–may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Him, though you have not seen, you love. In him, though you do not see him, yet believing, you exult with a joy unspeakable and triumphant; receiving, as the final issue of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (Challoner-Rheims)

“A joy unspeakable and triumphant” is something i experienced while i was a practicing Catholic. Since then i fell away for approx 5-6 yrs, and for the past 2 yrs. i’ve been trying to get back to the faith that i really never knew only to discover that i have more of a protestant mentality now.

It’s just not the same… but still my favorite verse.

Don’t have my bible out so I’ll go from memory. Isaiah 12, Song of Thanksgiving

I give You thanks O Lord. Though You have been angry with me, Your anger has abated and,You have consoled me.

God indeed is my savior. I am confident and unafraid

With joy you will draw water from the fountain of salvation and,
proclaim, on that day,

"Give thanks to The Lord, acclaim His name, make known His deeds, shout with joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Isreal.

There are many, but John 17 comes to mind: “…that all may be one, Father, as You are in Me and I am in You.”

This is a beautiful quote. As are all the others.

I do read scripture every night, and I am amazed at many of the touching and poetic passages. They say just what they need to, to convey the message. But sometimes, passages like these just stand out.

Caldera, I’m sorry to hear you have been struggling with your Faith. I pray that you will find inspiration in our Faith again, and that you find clarity and peace.

God Bless

I have 2 favorites:

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

and the verse from the book of Job: “I know that my Redeemer lives.”

I think these 2 pretty well sum it up.

I have so many I like. Some passages stick out at me for a while.
When I’m feeling sad, I like messages of hope. One in particular is Psalm 42:11, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.”
When I was struggling with understanding God’s love, Song of Solomon 7:10 stuck with me: “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.”
When I’m feeling happy, I like passages that speak of God’s goodness. I almost always enjoy Gospel passages and passages from epistles. I tend to like passages that aren’t as commonly quoted as some others. I guess if I am too familiar with a verse because I hear it from other sources so often, it tends to have less of an impact on me than if I encounter it myself.

Romans 8:38

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Corinthians: 4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
Code:
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Wow a few really hit me at the moment:

**“Where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more” ** (Romans 5)

"Set me as a seal upon your heart, for love is stronger than death" (Song of Songs 8)

And I don’t want to take this out of the original 🙂

And for simple theological elegance and conciseness:

"In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs." (Hebrews 1)

John 20:28 because the doubting Thomas realizes without a doubt that Jesus is God.

Matthew 11:28-30 is the most amazingly comforting one for me:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Psalm 27:7

Hear, O Lord, the sound of my call; have pity on me, and answer me…
has a very special meaning for me as I woke in the night about 5 years ago singing this Psalm and didn’t know which…only that it was a song… a refrain… a response… I had heard before…
This was to be the beginning of a “new conversion” for me… I have had others on my ‘Faith’s journey’…but this one has been the most exciting & rewarding of all… God is good!

for by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is a gift of god, not of works lest any man should boast

or

i am the way the truth and the light, no man cometh unto the father but by me

Well, of course there’s the obvious John 3:16…of course! But other than that, I love Wisdom 3:1…

“But the souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them.” (Jerusalem Bible)

Also one of my favorite is Psalm 1118:24:
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it.”

Like a favorite of Fuzzy, 1 Cor 13 is my favorite passage. I like to adapt 4 - 7 as my daily examine of conscience subing the word “Love” with my own name. Example; Was I kind? Was I patient? Slow to anger? Rejoice with others…? This passage is key for me because, if God is Love, then Paul helps us to understand in a practical way how we can reflect God’s Love in our every day life
