Since we’ve been talking about schools and public and private education, let’s take some time to mention a favorite teacher in elementary or high school, public, parochial, or private. Mention him or her and what influence he/she has had on you.

Mine: Two, Sister Roberta Mary, 8th. Grade. I was the class clown for many of my years, and Sister REALLY disliked me (and I her). I earned an A+ one quarter in English, and that’s what I got. I’m a teacher now, and I know how easy it would have been for her to reduce my grade and she didn’t.

Sophomore year high school, Br. Murphy. I said I left my homework at home, and he sent me home for it. 500 words for veracity later, I learned to tell the truth.

Virginia Benson, Lancaster High School, Lancaster, Ohio - Thanks Mrs. B.

Chester D. Rexroth, who taught psychology, sociology and history at Kennard Dale High School, Fawn Grove, PA, in the 60’s and 70’s. He was tall and slender, had a crewcut and was very well dressed. He never let up on me for being Catholic - I was probably the only one in the whole school, and they all thought I had horns and a tail. He forced me to defend my faith, and I rose to the occasion. In my yearbook he wrote, “I only picked on you because I love you,” and I knew he meant it. We respected each other through it all.
