I could also go crazy here with lyrics from The Cure… and I will share some lyrics later, but here’s another song by a different artist that means A LOT to me… I would play this song continuously over and over for months… I haven’t heard this song in a long time now, but wow the words are exactly what I was going through… and the music in this song is stunning…

Beach House - "Myth"

Drifting in and out
See the road you’re on

You came rolling down the cheek
You say just what you need
And in between
It’s never as it seems

Help me to make it… Help me to make it

If you built yourself a myth
You’d know just what to give

What comes after this
Momentary bliss
The consequence
Of what you do to me

Help me to make it… Help me to make it

Found yourself in a new direction
Aeons far from the sun
Can you come?
Would they come to breach you?
Let you know you’re not the only one

You can’t keep hangin’ on
To all that’s dead and gone

If you built yourself a myth
You’d know just what to give
Do you lie?
Oh, let the ashes fly

Help me to make it… Help me to make it

Plenty of them! Off the top of my head:
  1. “Choose your enemies carefully, for they will define you.”
    (U2, “Cedars of Lebanon”)
  2. “We are all equal, but individually different
And able to reach the impossible if we try
We find faith and strength in the most unlikely places
And love sometimes eludes us, but we try…”
    (Queensryche, “Falling Behind”)
  3. The entirety of “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M.
  4. “The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics.
  5. “One man stands on the edge of the ocean,
    A beacon on dry land,
    Eyes upon the horizon,
Waiting for her to come home…”
    (Pearl Jam, “Force of Nature”)
More to come… 😃

Things can be broken down
In this world of ours
You don’t have to be a famous person
Just to make your mark
A mother can be an inspiration
To her little son
Change his thoughts, his mind, his life,
Just with her gentle hum … Hum … Huuummmm
  • No Dought, “different people”
I’d buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.
Ingrid michaleson “the way you are”

From World’s Apart by Jars of Clay

I am the only one to blame for this
Sometimes it all ends up the same
Soaring on the wings of selfish pride
Flew too high and like Icarus I collide
With a world I try so hard to leave behind
To rid myself of all but love
To give and die

Let Mercy Lead by Rich Mullins

If we can reach
Beyond the wisdom of this age
Into the foolishness of God
That foolishness will save
Those who believe
Although their foolish hearts may break
They will find peace
And I’ll meet you in that place
Where mercy leads

Pax Christi!

“I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up in surrender.
There will be no white flag above my door.
I’m in love and always will be.”

So incredibly sad. By the perfectly named Dido. White Flag.

Depeche Mode -Somebody

I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who’ll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She’ll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She’ll hear me out
And won’t easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she’ll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me…

My hubby sent this to me on a cassette tape (with other songs he recorded for me -well rerecorded from other peoples cassettes before the days of downloading) more than twenty years ago when he was on a 6 month med cruise while serving in the US Navy. ❤️

This song makes me think of my grandchildren:

For Baby (for Bobbie)

I’ll walk in the rain by your side,
I’ll cling to the warmth of your hand.
I’ll do anything to keep you satisfied,
I’ll love you more than anybody can.

And the wind will whisper your name to me.
Little birds will sing along in time.
Leaves will bow down when you walk by,
And morning bells will chime.

I’ll be there when you’re feelin’ down,
To kiss away the tears if you cry
I’ll share with you all the happiness I’ve found;
A reflection of the love in your eyes.

And I’ll sing you the songs of the rainbow;
A whisper of the joy that is mine.
And leaves will bow down when you walk by,
And morning bells will chime.

I’ll walk in the rain by your side.
I’ll cling to the warmth of your tiny hand.
I’ll do anything to help understand.
And I’ll love you more than anybody can.

And the wind will whisper your name to me.
Little birds will sing along in time.
Leaves will bow down when you walk by:
And morning bells will chime.

“Just once in his life
One man has his time
And that time is now
I’m coming alive”

----Saint Elmo’s Fire; John Parr

I told you
That we could fly
Cause we all have wings
But some of us don’t know why…

-Never Tear Us Apart, INXS

Peter Gabriel: “You can keep my things, they’ve come to take me home.”

(Solsbury Hill)
Amen. What a song.

I have a weakness for this:

“A son of the swastika of '45,
parading a peroxide standard.
Graffiti disciples conjour testaments of hatred
Aerosol wands whisper where the searchlights
Trim the barbed wire hedges”

(Marillion)

It is dated now, but the line about the searchlights is beyond delicious, even if the whole stanza is dark.

…But remember this, my brother
See in this some higher plan
You must use this precious silver
To become an honest man
By the witness of the martyrs
By the passion and the blood,
God has raised you out of darkness
I have bought your soul for God…

The scene with the Bishop in Les Miserables…

“Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup…”

-“Don’t Dream It’s Over”, Crowded House

Otis Redding: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay

Sittin’ in the morning sun
I’ll be sittin’ when the evening comes
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch them roll away again, yeah

I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh
I’m just sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Wastin’ time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco Bay
Cuz I’ve had nothing to live for
And look like nothing’s gonna come my way

So, I’m just gon’ sit on the dock of the bay
Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh
I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Wastin’ time

Looks like nothing’s gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can’t do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I’ll remain the same, listen

Sittin’ here resting my bones
And this loneliness won’t leave me alone, listen
Two thousand miles I roam
Just to make this dock my home, now

I’m just gon’ sit at the dock of a bay
Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh
Sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Wastin’ time

This is soul poetry, in two senses of the word "soul."

“Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup…”

-“Don’t Dream It’s Over”, Crowded House
I’ve always loved the imagery in that one little line.

Trying hard to recreate
What had yet to be created

– “What a Fool Believes”, Doobie Brothers

Daisy, you
Shouldn’t do the things you do
But you’re just so incapable of changing
You lie so well
I could never even tell
What were facts in your artful rearranging

– “Labrador”, Aimee Mann

Ok, this is one for us oldsters. Nothing profound, just funny. The song is “I Can’t Tell A Lie” written by the phenomenal Irving Berlin for the movie “Holiday Inn” (1942) starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby:

I could say that you’re homely
Just as homely as pie
But this is Washington’s Birthday
And I’ve got to say you’re beautiful
'Cause I can’t tell a lie.

I could say that you’re stupid
Nothing up in your crown
But this is Washington’s Birthday
And the truthful he
Of the cherry tree
Would look down on me
And frown.

I could say that I hate you if I try
But I’ve got to say I love you
'Cause it’s February the twenty-second
And I can’t tell a lie.

😃

“And the way the rain comes down hard
That’s how I feel inside…”
