The effort in Congress to increase the maximum fines for violations of the broadcast indecency law was temporarily thwarted when the fine increase amendment was dropped from the Defense Department Authorization Bill --but the fight to increase those fines has not stopped. Senators Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and John Ensign (R-Nevada) have devised another legislative maneuver to get both Houses of Congress to pass legislation that will provide for a ten-fold increase in the maximum fine amount.

We need to let Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle know that the American public is sick and tired of indecent material on our public airwaves. Bigger indecency fines are needed because many radio and TV stations are now owned by large corporations that are not deterred by the existing maximum fine of $27,500!

Please take a minute, read our petition, then sign. We collected the signatures of nearly 1400 concerned Morality in Media supporters in our earlier effort to make sure the amendment stayed on the DoD bill, but we need thousands more to let the US Senate know Americans want to see legislative action on this issue.

While I’m for increasing the maximum fines, why was this on a DoD bill in the first place?

While I agree with the amendment, it does not belong attached to the Defense Department Authorization Bill.

If it is sound, let it stand alone.

Almeria,
The Republicans attached it to the DoD Bill for the following reasons:

IF anyone votes against the amendment he/she has to vote against funding the military. REPUBLICANS WIN!

IF anyone votes for Military funding, then they are said to be in fovor of the amendment. REPUBLICANS WIN!

Either way, those who are against the amendment loose.

I say, Let them cut it off the bill. If the amendment is sound, then let it become a bill by itself and I would sign a petition to sign that bill.

I agree. We have to stop this stuff. It reaaly ends up distorting voting records as well as other things. I believe there was legislation that would end this but was defeated.
