Feast of St. Josemaria Escriva!

I didn’t hear anything about today being the his feast at daily mass today, but I have always felt a connection to St. JoseMaria after coming across his short books a long time ago. His organization is unfairly maligned and misunderstood in the media, but he was the guiding force behind the creation of the University of Navarre, and they produced a beautiful study version of the New Testament. The Navarre Gospels are still my first choice for reading the Gospels, and the commentary is excellent.

Anyone else a devotee of this saint?

I’m in the Work, so we make a pretty big deal about June 26th around here!

For any of the big feast days and solemnities, we try to include a nice dessert or something that will kind reinforce the importance of the day with the kids. We just took the kids out for ice cream on Wednesday because it was the Nativity of John the Baptist. For tonight, I actually broke down and baked a red velvet cake. I’m a lousy baker, but this one came out presentably, thank goodness. Now we’ll just to see how it tastes…

Also, there is a listing here of the locations across the US that will be celebrating a special Mass today or in the coming days…

We will be going to a special Mass tonight. I am really looking forward to it. There is an Opus Dei center not far from here and there are often special evenings for either men or women with talks, confession, and benediction. I am planning to attend the next one of those i hear about!

I like the tradition of a special dessert. I’ll have to stop by the store…no time to bake now!

The Mass was very, very nice. Aside from the priests of that parish there were several Opus Dei priests and several other diocesean priests concelebrating. The parish also has 2 seminarians with them this summer who were acting as acoylates (altar boys). All of the commons were in Latin and the choir did a good job. Much of the congregation was able to sing them also. I really liked the readings that have been chosen for his Mass–all having to do with the sacred nature of man’s work! The priest who gave the homily met St. Josemaria and spent a month living with him in Rome after he was first ordained. So he received direction from a priest who had been ordained almost 50 years and who would later be cannonized! Amazing!!

There was a reception afterward, but we didn’t know about it in advance so could stay to try and meet the priests and Opus Dei members. I hope by this time next year, I’ll have had at least a few expereinces of the women’s evenings of recollectiong that they hold at the local Opus Dei center.
