Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday was First Friday and I’m sorry I didn’t have an opportunity to post a thread on Reparation to the Sacred Heart, but here I am today, and thanks be to God I have a few minutes before getting ready to receive the Sacrament of Penance to encourage all to remember that today is not only a Feast to celebrate but also the First Saturday of the Month.

Sister Lucia of Fatima had an apparition of Jesus and Mary when she was a young nun in a convent in Spain. Each time I read this account, I am moved by it:
Lucia was a postulant in the Convent of St. Dorothy in Pontevedra, Spain when she had the apparition of our Blessed Mother. She was standing over a cloud of light with the Child Jesus at her side. The Blessed Virgin put one hand on Lucia’s shoulder, while her other hand sustained her Immaculate Heart that was surrounded with thorns. The Child Jesus said: "Have compassion on the Heart of your Blessed Mother. It is surrounded with thorns that ungrateful men pierce each moment, and there is no one that is willing to offer an act of reparation to take the thorns away."

Our Lady immediately said to Lucia: "Look, my daughter. My Heart is surrounded with thorns that ungrateful men pierce unceasingly with their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me and announce that for all those, who for five consecutive first Saturdays, confess, receive Holy Communion, pray the Holy Rosary and accompany me for 15 minutes by meditating the mysteries of the Holy Rosary with the intention to do reparation, I promise to assist them at the hour of death with the graces needed for salvation."
Another translation used the phrase: “Keep me company” rather than “accompany me”. Keeping our Lady company has such a tender connotation! I remember keeping my own mother company, being the youngest, when all my siblings had gotten married. Sometimes people forget Mary is not a statue but a living person who loves us and has suffered with Jesus for us. In a mysterious way, we can make reparation for our own sins and the sins of others who have caused her Son and herself to suffer.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of the Church Pray for us.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for us as we celebrate this Feast today - when you entered the temple in humility before God our Father, presenting His Son – His Only Begotten Son, His Word made Flesh for us!

If you want to find Jesus, follow his mother. (Not my own words)

Jesus was the source of his Mother’s Goodness. She sought him ought. We can find him through her. Just like she sought him in the temple at the age of twelve. Just like she brought him to her cousins Elizabeth and John the Baptist, she can bring him to us.

Feb 2 is also Candlemass.
There were many small features in the old calendar, some tied closely to ethnic traditions, that got swept away.

For instance if Sexagesima is “less important” than Lent, we can get rid of Lent, etc. There was a minimalist attitude in the air.

We’re having Candmass, and Blessing of the Throat (Saint Blaise) tonight.

ARe you in the U.S.?

I’ve had throat blessings on Feast of St. Blaise. Today isn’t his feast day.

Yes, in the US this year it falls on Feb 3. Tonight’s vigil mass counts for the third.

I see, since the 3rd this year is a Sunday.

That’ll be a lot of throat blessing.

Father announced that “a general blessing” would be given to the entire congregation, but that an individual blessing could be obtained after the mass.

Dear Bon_Croix,

Thanks so much for your reply and for your love of Jesus through Mary! 🙂

Polish American homes would get a “thunder candle” blessed this day. They light it when lightning is near.

We had Candlemass or Candlemas Mass at our Diocesan EF Church this Saturday morning. They gave us a candle, but blessed any other candle you bring in. There’s many traditions related to bees, purity, letting our own light shine, etc.

Yes, we celebrated the Presentation at yesterday morning’s Mass (Saturday morning) and blessed candles for the St. Blaise blessing were in the sacristy, but our Parochial Vicar decided that since the Saturday evening Mass wasn’t yet the feast of St. Blaise, only the vigil, he wouldn’t do the blessing of throats. 😦

I missed Candlemas yesterday. I really wanted to attend, but I was ill. We had a Solemn High Mass since it was first Saturday as well.

Dear TenEleven,

Today is the Feast of St. Blaise, (Feb. 3) and our Pastor gave blessing of throats gave Mass. Perhaps if the Parochial Vicar didn’t bless throats yesterday he may offer that blessing today. I hope so 🙂

Dear Mrsdizzyd,

Hope you’re better today. I’ll remember you in my Rosary. Mary help of the sick, pray for us. Jesus we trust in you! St. Blaise, pray for us.

We had Candlemas Saturday morning with First Saturday. Fr blessed candles after the Mass. We had the blessing of the throats this morning after Mass.

Thanks for sharing your blessings! Hope Father gave a good homily at Mass, as well! 🙂 It seemed to me the Gospel of Luke on this First Saturday, was important, and by God’s Grace intended to remind us to offer our Holy Communions of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart.

Hopefully those who do not have a Saturday Mass on First Saturday or cannot attend Mass due to some other reason – especially illness – offer some sacrifice or suffering they endure with God’s Help and in union with the Sword that Pierced the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

In my experience, no one wants the general one, they want the individual one. We did it after all weekend Masses - and at least as many came up for St. Blaise blessing as did for Holy Communion.

Catholics like tactile expressions of their Tradition.

Yes, I noticed that. Everyone stayed. Let’s just say that the homily was “interesting”. We have an older priest who doesn’t mince words. Sometimes he makes me chuckle.

I also went to mass on Sunday morning, but did not stay for a second throat blessing. I like to receive Communion. 🙂
