What should one do on February 14th, feast because it’s St. Valentine’s day? Or fast because it’s Ash Wednesday?

Also I forget, does the Church require one to abstain on Ash Wednesday, or merely fast?

Well seeing as the reformed calandar doesn’t even name Saint Valentine anymore, I don’t think the Church takes an issue either way. Who knows why they removed him anyways? I know he is commemorated in the EF so it must have been during the second Vatican council .

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the two days of the year in which any Catholic up to 59 is required to fast and abstinence. And gurss what it’s a beautiful thing. Fasting isn’t emphasised enough in my opinion. Don’t do it if it’s just a burden. The reason we fast is to come closer to awareness of God.

Some of the US dioceses have already laid down the law and said the fasting requirement is not going to be dispensed for Valentine’s Day, so you gotta fast.

I’ll be fasting. We’re going out this weekend instead.

Fast and abstain because even tho it falls on Valentine’s Day this year, it is still Ash Wednesday.

Bad advice. Burden or not, it is binding on Catholics so obliged under pain if sin. If one feels closer to God that is ideal. If it doesn’t you do it anyway at the very least out of obedience.

I’m pretty certain that Ash Wednesday is a liturgical event that ranks above St. Valentine’s Day and takes priority.

Although perhaps not in churches and communities where Valentine is the patron saint- that could change the ranking in those particular situations.

This is going to be a strange one this year. My wife and I went out on our first date on Valentines Day 30 years ago. We flew to an UItimate tournament in San Diego. 😎

We’ve got a romantic three day weekend planned so we’ll persevere. Just no big romantic Valentine’s Day dinner.

No and the liturgical table of precedence is clear on this. Ash Wednesday is at the very top, even above universal and much less local solemnities.

Any solemnities impeded by Ash Wednesday are transferred to the next unimpeded day.

Fwiw. Others are correct on the teaching.

That being said, It is not a holy day of obligation.

Saint Valentine’s day isn’t even on the General Roman Calendar in the OF calendar.
