I hate this phrase. i’ve heard it over and over lately by pastors just google it and you’ll see what i’m talking about. we aren’t to look to them or the church to be “feed” we are to pick up our bibles and feed ourselves. this isn’t biblical! i know what they are trying to get across ie. the people chained to the pew always looking for the church to make it a fulfilling experience but come on. did jesus ever say go feed yourself? no he said feed my lambs feed my sheep. how can a pastor honestly say such a horrible thing? people are starving for jesus. feed them. if you have the food—jesus----share. this is a major reason why i’m converting… the church (acting as christ) feeds me christ literally. we are feeding each other. not oneself. am i getting worked up over nothing?
 
Well, friend,
I WANT you to convert,
but let’s be realistic. Not ALL Catholic priests
are great at feeding the flock.
My parish priest is a terrific teacher,
but I have also been to parishes where the
priest is BLAH at teaching and that’s being nice.

So, even in the Catholic church, you’ll have to do some
self-feeding. There’s more than one way of the Church
feeding you your doctrinal food. Sermons/homilies are great
and should be always great. But you need to get you a good Catholic library going with orthodox Catholic literature and study it, along with your Bible, every day.

along with Thomas J. Nash’s SUPERB explanation
of the Eucharist called **“Worthy Is The Lamb,” **available
from Ignatius Press. You won’t find a better, more thorough book on the Mass ANYWHERE. That book changed my life.

On Mary, Catholic Answers puts out a great intro called, I think,
MEETING MARY.
Then, at amazon.com, ACTA publishers puts out
THE CATHOLIC COMPANION TO MARY (published 2007),
and 99% of it is superb (( the author, a nun, throws in a blurb
for a liberal organization at the very end and adds a weird
politically-correct prayer to Mary. Other than that, it’s a
terrific book )).

And of course, get The CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

well i’m not saying one shouldn’t do some self feeding if that means continually learning and growing (which i do by the way.i will check out the books thanks.) one must be proactive in these matters but i just cant look someone in the eye and say 'go feed yourself" if a person has come to a church seeking and desiring God how can we not feed them? by feeding i mean offering ourselves to them in whatever way–teaching, caring, serving. as much as it takes! even if they are “unappreciative and undeserving” (another phrase that ticks me off) as long as it takes.after all Love bears all things not just the reasonable things.
sometimes i think this idea about feeding yourself is highjacked by people who are burnt out and tired of “feeding the sheep” but heres what i say to them “suck it up” this is what it is all about. i dont look at my children and say feed yourself cause mommy is tired and you little brats dont appreciatate me. i am called to be like Christ and serve. Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible…not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh… in humility consider others better than yourselves. i know i have cut and pasted a few different verses here but this captures what i think about the go feed yourself phrase. its bologna!

Not some failure on the pastor‘s part to be all things to all people, but this in-your-face refusal to do his duty by those who look to him for formation, inspiration, and guidance? There seems to be a LOT of that in certain marketing-conscious religious circles, where nothing but numbers seems to matter. Bring the people in, then tell them they`re on their own.
