I’ve never attempted to attach a file before, so I hope that works okay. Anyway, I wanted to come up with a non-threatening way to present the church’s teaching on birth control to young people, so I wrote the attached “dialogue” between two fictional sisters. Please give me any feedback you have and feel free to use this piece if you feel you have any use for it.

Okay, I can’t open the link, so I must have done something wrong. Assuming everyone else has the same problem, can someone let me know what I need to do to successfully save a Microsoft Word document as an attachment in these forums??

I would introduce them to Christopher West’s Theology of the Body. You can download talks from his website or buy his CD’s. If the students are older get Janet Smith’s “Contraception Why Not?”.

I believe ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS should be required to listen to all of Christopher Wests CD’s on the Theology of the Body! His talks are so incredible I do not have the words to describe it.

Have You Heard CHRISTOPHER WEST Speak on THE THEOLOGY OF THE BODY?

Looks good!!! 👍

(I hope the “young people” aren’t too young- and their parents have given permission for such a program.)

My only thought- in the beggining, Cora says she wants to order an alcoholic beverage. Was this done on purpose? I don’t want an underlying message to be that alcohol solves problems and relieves stress… (I know it’s minor compared to the ensuing discussion.)

Note to PLAL: I also love Christopher West and really enjoyed the Smith tape. I tried to make this dialogue self-sufficient, which is why I didn’t include references to other works, but I definitely refer people to West when I give my talks. Thanks for reading.

Note to Siena: I agree. Actually, by young people, I should have been more specific since I was thinking “young” in the sense of my early 20’s brother and his fiance, who have just gotten engaged. But yet, why not make it accessable to high school students too, right? Instead of needing an alcoholic drink, I think I’ll have Dora say something like, “What I really need it a couple aspirin.” Or something.

👍 I really like it!

As a promoter of NFP I think it is great!! I would change the “alchohol vs. aspirin” part in general, because then you could refer back to it healing the body in the short term. As in, you talk about the medicine for the cholesterol. You could then later reference the aspirin she just took. “What if you took aspirin all the time, even if you only had a headache once a month?” is an example I’m thinking of. Though it might stray their talk too far off track. Still, the aspirin addresses taking a pill to heal a sick body. It could be just another way to address the problem of taking a pill to make a well body, broken.

The whole thing as it is, is fabulous!! I’m an actress if you ever want to film it!! lol! What a great way to get the point across! Keep writing!

Thank for the feedback. Good suggestion, I’ll have to see what I can do. Anyway, I was hoping for Katies Holmes for the part of Lindsay, but she violated the no-dating-weird-scientologists-and-having-their-kids-before-marriage clause of the contract, so the part is yours!

👍 It’s a great little skit–great idea to format it as a heart-to-heart talk between sisters 👍

Is your member name in reference to artificial birth control, Awfulthings? 😃 I think you hit the nail on the head, and for people in their early twenties, I don’t think you should change a thing. The margarita line is obviously sarcastic, and people of that age (I’m 23) will be able to tell that you’re not sending mixed or hidden messages. Although for high schoolers, you may want to change it, mainly to keep in the parent’s good books. You are using it to illustrate that the lady is tired and frazzled, not that alcohol will solve all your problems. Good job!

I agree that the alcohol line is perfect for the 20 something crowd.

I just can’t make you people happy. Some want the alcohol and some just headache medication, so as a compromise, she will be using alcohol and prescription medication.

Seriously, though, thanks for all the (name removed by moderator)ut. Glad to see something I wrote so quickly turned out relatively well (though it does sound a bit like an infomercial at points, in my opinion). Anyway, I gave it to my brother’s fiance to read the other day. They are living together and she’s offered my wife free birth control (which we don’t use, of course) from the doctor’s office where she works. I’m her RCIA sponsor, so I told her to read the piece and highlight the things that stuck out. We talked on the phone last night and “nothing really stuck out”, she told me. Sigh. Pray for her and me, it will be an uphill battle, but I’ve talked with my best friend, who is the priest they will be working with, and we’re working on her together. My next conversation with her will be about the living together. She respects my opinion, but doesn’t have the connection with Christ yet to allow him to transform her lifestyle or take to heart his teachings.

Ha. No, actually, that was my screen name, ID, and e-mail addy when I used to write and publish in the horror industry (my dialogue was better then). I kept it because it sticks out and makes people wonder. When a fundamentalist asks, I tell him that it refers to end-times stuff.

Wow! Now THAT’s the kind of best friend to have!! 👍

Incidentally, the priest friend I mentioned just read the piece and noticed that I consistently abbreviate Natural Family Planning as NPF instead of NFP. Just in case anyone is using this piece in any way, I thought I’d point that rather silly mistake out before anyone else gets embarrassed by using this piece.
