Ferdinand III (1199 or 1201-1252) was King of Castile from 1217 to 1252.
He was the son of Alfonso IX of Leon and Berenguela of Castile.
Ferdinand had the Cathedral of Burgos erected.
He was a patron of the mendicant orders. Mendicant orders are religious orders which depend directly on charity for their livelihood.
Ferdinand III’s feast day is May 30.
 
I lived in Spain my junior year in college. I am pretty sure I saw the cathedral in Burgos. Very beautiful. The history of Spain is so fascinating. I would love to return. When I lived there Franco was still in power. Spain is a beautiful countty with a very rich history.
And this is not the same Ferdinand that was married to Isabela.
 
Ferdinand III founded the University of Salamanca. He founded hospitals and monasteries.
Sometimes he pardoned former offenders to his throne.

I know the university there is very old. I visited Salamanca and Avila.
