Fermented Wine

I have been reading material by the Seventh Day Adventists, saying that when Jesus turned water into wine at Galilee, this was unfermented wine i.e. grape juice not real (fermented) wine because it would go against Habkuk 2:15, and Christ wouldnt do that…(go against his word) ?? And created over 180 gallons of drink for the wedding…?!

They used another example in their literature, at the last supper they argue it was grape juice, furthmore they say we shouldnt be drinking fermented wine as Jesus blood because the process involved in fermenting wine is the same as leavening it, which is exactly the opposite of what he wanted…?

They went into the greek but they argue the “unfermented” version of wine for Jesus.

Is their any truth in this…?

We are not wrong to drink real wine at the communion are we? The church isnt wrong, as this pdf makes out??

How do they explain what the steward said - “Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

Im sure they are mi-sguided! If you want to know what church is gunning for the catholics its def this one!

The Roman Catholic Church believes that the matter for the Eucharist must be wheaten
bread and fermented wine from grapes: it holds that, if the gluten has been entirely
removed, the result is not true wheaten bread,[48] and that grape juice that has not begun
even minimally to ferment cannot be accepted as wine. It allows in certain circumstances
low-gluten bread and mustum (grape juice in which fermentation has begun but has been
suspended without altering the nature of the juice), and it permits Holy Communion to be
received under the form of either bread or wine alone, except by a priest who is
celebrating Mass without other priests or as principal celebrant.

The Seventh Day Adventists are historically anti-Catholic. Their foundress, Ellen Gould White, argued that the Pope was the AntiChrist b/c one of his titles (which wasn’t really even an official title, more like a synonym for one of his titles) added up to 666 in Roman Numerals. Funny how she never mentioned that her own name also added up to 666 in Roman Numerals! (tons of other people’s names, do, as well).

As for “unfermented” wine: grape juice wasn’t invented until the 1800’s (by a man name Welch, for the express purpose of teetotaling Protestant’s communion services). To keep grapes from fermenting (turning into wine) you need refrigeration, which wasn’t around in Jesus’ time.

I’ve also heard teetotaler’s argue that Jesus drank “New wine”, which was unfermented, i.e., grape juice. However, in The Acts of the Apostles, when the Apostles are speaking in tongues on the day of Pentecost, the onlookers accuse them of "having had too much new wine, too which Peter replied “These men aren’t DRUNK, as it’s only 10 in the morning.” I think I’ll take Peter’s word the alcoholic content of “new wine” over people that came along 1800 years later .

The argument about the fermenting of wine being like the leavening of bread is pretty ridiculous, because they fermented grape juice (i.e. turned it into wine) to make it “shelf stable.” They could then store the wine and it would be ready for trips/travel or a later day where grape juice would spoil rather quickly.

Exactly. What day was this of the wedding? According to John, it was the 3rd day. That’s why Jesus created 180 gallons, because there was 4 days left for the wedding!

And, think about it, unfermented grape juice would have soured over the course of the next day or so leaving the wedding guests wretching! :bigyikes:

In Palestine, grapes are ripe for eating and for making fresh grape juice from the end of June until the middle of November. The wedding feast of Cana and the Last Supper both occurred around the time of the Passover in March-April. In Jesus’ day, the only form of grape juice available in Palestine in March-April was fermented grape wine.
