Festival Highlights Christian Independent Films

The San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival is on a mission of hope and antithesis.

Last November, gathering less than 200 yards from where Col. William Barrett Travis drew his legendary line in the sand more than 160 years ago, more than 600 filmmakers and friends of Christian culture changers stood to draw a line. The message: We will not allow our culture to be defined by a Christ-rejecting Hollywood elite. The venue: the first-ever San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival and Jubilee Awards.

Festival founder Doug Phillips explained, “The mission of the festival is to encourage Christian filmmakers to neither retreat from society, nor to synthesize with paganism – but to do God’s work, God’s way, from the ground level up. We are urging filmographers to force the antithesis between cultural righteousness and cultural evil. We are pleased that this call to take a stand for Christ in the critical arena of film has resonated with Christians across the globe.”

In the wake of last year’s inaugural event, Vision Forum Ministries is pleased to host round two: the Second Annual San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival and Jubilee Awards to be held on October 27-29, 2005 at the Lila Cockrell Theater and Gonzalez Convention Center. This 2005 festival will feature more than 40 independent Christian films on four screens over a three-day span. More than a thousand attendees are expected to attend.

World Premiere of THE LEAGUE OF GRATEFUL SONS

The festival is also honored to host the world premiere of THE LEAGUE OF GRATEFUL SONS, a powerful documentary which tells the story of hope, heroes, and generations through stirring tales of visionary fatherhood among the men who fought in the bloody conflict for the island of Iwo Jima in the spring of 1945.

“THE LEAGUE OF GRATEFUL SONS is not just another war film.” observed Phillips, “It is the true story of how faithful fathers and honoring sons returned to the black sands of Iwo Jima for the 60th anniversary of the epic battle and unearthed generational lessons for the sons and daughters of our day.”

A Vision of Hope, A Vision of Victory

The San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival seeks to offer a vision for victory to Christians involved in film, “Those who take part in the festival will not only hear a message of hope,” explained Phillips, “but they will witness the fruits of the hopeful — men and women laboring to advance the crown rights of Christ in a medium of defining significance for twenty-first century Christians.”

Just as Travis’ call to arms in 1836 sparked the Texans’ cause, the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival appears to have lit a new candle of hope for Christian filmmakers.

“Hollywood is now on notice that there are alternatives to them,” remarked Phillips. “This is only the beginning – we believe that greater things are yet to come.”
