I agree. All statements are unsubstantiated. No offense to the good bishop who made it. But statistics must be backed by a good study, otherwise its not fact, but an opinion.

Are you saying that the Bishop doesn’t know what he is looking at? Good grief! Well actually, the Philippian Islands are packed so tight with people that it’s hard to figure put what is happening.

When in comes to statistics, there is an old saying: “figures don’t lie, but liars do sometimes figure.”

Just want to share practice of the Filipino catholics in our country that most maybe 70-80 percent don’t go to confession before receiving the communion. Most will attend only the mass for if there is great feasts like, black nazarene etc, also on Palm sunday only, many do not know the importance of the sacraments, like confession, confirmation, marriage and anointing of the sick. Some will attend mass only for devotion to a saint like Mary, some will attend the mass for healing and miracles, some will attend mass only for the blessings of the palm, oil, and water on easter sunday. Some believe that they will just attend the Mass for the forgiveness of their sins, some believe that St. May is God, Many filipino catholics do not participate in the Parish programs, Many Catholics believes in faith healers or those witch doctors. Many of us here also are using contraception, and are unaware that it is a mortal sin. And, many things beyond the Catholic Faith.

I amaze when I read many things in this forum, American or the english speaking catholics are very aware of our catholic theolgy and beliefs.

What steps do you think you can take to help resolve these issues?

You (and everyone else) are always welcome to voice your concerns, but I strongly believe one should always tell us in the same breath how they plan to help. No one expects anyone to solve all problems but what do you plan to do in your own little way?

I read what Bishop Teodoro said in the posted link and he didn’t even say people are leaving the Catholic Church. He said people are more interested in charismatic Catholicism than in Mass. So they are still Catholic. So Dhugz’s claims again are wrong. Even the bishop himself never said people are leaving the Catholic Church.

I manage an Oratory and for the past five years a Filipino group has weekly devotions and a monthly mass. They have proven themselves to be devout catholics.
I arranged a weekend retreat for a second group of Filipinoes and find them to be just as devout as the first group. I am in the process of scheduling more weekend retreats for this group.
We have different monthly events in Spanish, English, and Filipono . All are strong in the faith and generous in their support of the oratory.
I live in the U.S. not the Phillipines, I see no reason to demean any ethnic group!
Catholics are either strong or weak in their faith!
I am privileged to be associated with Catholics of such strong faith!

You could say in many ways your post describes American Catholics. I don’t believe this is a localized problem, its more like a Church wide problem. Mass attendance is somewhere in the mid to upper 20% range for the Church as a whole. Less than a third of Catholics go to Mass on Sunday.

I’ll try to find the stats I am quoting.

Update, for 2011 US Catholics; 22% report going to Mass at least once a week. The only number I see for the Philippines is for 2004 and it is much better than here in the USA at48%.

I think you have an agenda. Why do you talk down the Philippino people every time you are involved on a thread?

You can truth the athiest website, I’ll trust Georgetown University which is Catholic. Again I say, I wish we had the percentage of Catholics going to Mass on Sunday that the Phillippines has!

I know I’ve mentioned this often before I just want to say again that my local parish Church has 10 Masses every Sunday to accommodate all who want attend Mass and even then people are standing outside the Church.

Maybe i made mistakes on the percentage i have said, but please it is not the entire issue here, i am just sharing what practices of the filipino catholics here, i said, i was amaze with american catholics in this forum because many of you guys, are aware and willing to know the truth in our faith. I dont have any agenda that is just your illusion. Brother, I am not against the Church i just want to share with you how filipino practicing as catholics. I am just telling you that many are mixing their faith with the uncatholic practices. If you think i am just trying to degrade the Catholic Church in the Philippines no its not! Maybe its just my fear that many Protestant sects trying to use those uncatholic practices of the Filipino catholics to demean the Church. They say that we catholics believe on witch doctors, and engaged with spirits, some of filipino catholics also give offering to spirits causing maybe to their illnesses. Many of us here are not aware of the teachings of the Church. My point only is that How and What do you think for those Catholics who do not really subscribe to the Catholic teachings? That is what i am trying to raise here! If you think i am just making propaganda, and dont want to face this issue, i rest my case. Thanks.

This is not sharing, this is disparaging Filipinos. How does this help you or the Filipino Catholics? This thread lacks any ounce of charity. There are no questions asked, there are no issues waiting to be addressed. Just putting Catholicism in the Philippines in a bad light.
