When choosing and looking for a spiritual director, should one look for one with experience in a certain field, such as those who have experience with guiding people who have been abused? Is someone’s background mandatory for being helped? Thank you

if someone has issues that call for therapy the proper person is a therapist, not a spiritual director.
 
Spiritual direction is appropriate for anyone who wants to grow spiritually. Specific issues, such as previous abuse, can affect the spiritual direction and can affect the decision of who’s best suited to assist.

If you have needs that fall outside the scope of spiritual direction, it is possible you might want therapy in addition to spiritual direction.

The purpose of spiritual direction is for another person to give you advice as to where God may be leading you. It is extremely important that a spiritual director be faithful to the teachings of the Church. It would be counterproductive- even damaging- if a spiritual director had you do things like centering prayers, and other spiritual practices that go against Catholic teaching. Spiritual directors are usually your confessor as well- and even if they’re not, they usually give you some advice when it comes to moral issues.

If you find yourself attracted to a charism of a particular religious order, that’s a good place to start- just make sure they’re orthodox.
 
I am currently in search of a Spiritual Director that can help me discern a possible change in my life. I am lokoing for someone very specific and am hoping the eMail I just sent to the Benedictine Monastery about 30 miles from where I currently live will be able to fulfill my needs.

I do not know what it is, but for some particular reason (maybe it is because much of my early formation was under the Benedictines) I would prefer one from a religious (preferably monastic) order.

If you’re a lay person and orthodox, you will benefit from the priests of Opus Dei. They are readily available to provide spiritual direction. If you are in a city in which they have a center, give them a call.
