Finding a Sponsor

My church is (theoretically) doing the rite of welcoming this Sunday, since the rite of election/call to conversion is being held next weekend… But, no one has sponsors. I have two couples (four people, I suppose) I’m thinking of approaching to be my sponsor. Is approaching a potential sponsor the responsibility of the candidate? If so, should I do this now? We haven’t talked about it at all in our RCIA class. I have a meeting with the priest tomorrow to fill out forms for the call to continuing conversion - should I ask him about it then? And, finally, assuming it is my responsibility to find a sponsor, how should I approach the people I’m interested in asking?

When I came into the Church I, unfortunately, didn’t know any faithful Catholics to sponsor me. I had been meeting with a priest privately for instruction (I was baptized Catholic, so I wasn’t in the RCIA class) and asked him to find me a sponsor. He did, and we’ve become great friends, in fact my sponsor is now also my daughter’s godfather and his wife her godmother!

My wife is currently coming into the Church, she asked me to sponsor her and I, of course, am so doing.

It really can go either way.

From what i have seen most Catholics are very happy to be asked to be a sponsor. If you are uncomfortable asking them the priest or your RCIA director usually have individuals they go to and ask.

i was so lucky in my parish, i had people approaching me after Mass when they found out i was converting. i already had my sponsor from another avenue that we are members of but now i have 3 back-ups. i have to laugh and think…God knows i need all the help i can get and has sent many to help me…

Congratulations!
I am going through the same process (although, the Rite of Welcoming for us was on November 2nd). Prior to this happening I just mentioned that I didn’t know anyone to ask to be my sponser and the RCIA team found someone for me. It has worked out well.
