Finding a TLM Parish - or at least a benign OF Parish?

Hang in there buddy I know how you feel about your lack of options. I am up here in the suburbs of the windy city and EF masses are popping up, it’s not long before they start showing up in your area. Continue to go to mass (don’t listen to SpiritusSanctus) if you have to go to a mass where it lacks reverence then you lead by example by showing reverence. If you are willing to make the drive for the EF then do it, and offer the sacrifice to the Lord!

If you are willing, you can start to gather other people who might be interested in the EF and request for it.
Amen to your whole post!! BTW., One can get plenty of information about getting a TLM. in your own parish:

Tell me about it! I live in Texas. An hour and a quarter round trip… that’s like a trip to a specialty shop or something.

You small-staters are such spoiled babies. 😉
:rotfl:
I was looking at the map once and trying to figure out how long it would take to drive across Texas…and when I was a kid I thought Iowa was a long state!

Anyway, to the question posted by the OP, I would definitely drive to the churches with the TLM. I knew of families that had and have a good hour drive time to get to an outstanding OF mass back in Ohio. Now I attend an EF mass and I am lucky that I don’t have a long drive, but I know families who would love to “only” drive an hour to get to an EF mass.

I do go to daily mass in the OF as there are no daily masses available anywhere close to where I live. When we had bad snow storms this past winter, I did go to the local OF Sunday masses as I was lucky we could dig out enough to get to mass. I say this since even though I prefer and am attached to the EF of the mass, going to mass is more important than the form. If you do start going to the EF mass and cannot make it for some reason on a Sunday, I agree with a previous poster that you go to the closer churches and model reverence.

Here is their web page for EF Mass locations. Our parish in Phoenix has daily low mass @0630 and Missa Cantata on Sundays @1300 I attend the 0730 Sunday NO. I have attended the Sunday EFM. It’s about 2 hours long

There is one in Quincy, and one in KC.

As to what is the “true Mass,” which Mass would that be? The one after the Council of Trent? (The EF Mass) or one used from 1000 to 1570?

We are a young family. With two children, an almost 3yr old, and a 1.5yr old, and we have one on the way. We drive an 1hr 20mins EACH way to participate in a Traditional Mass. I dragged my feet in the beginning. Telling my husband what a chore it was when our local parish is literally 5 mins from our house. It has been worth all the sacrifice. We NEVER worry that something fishy will be going on in the liturgy. Or that a Priest or Deacon will say something contrary to Church teaching.
My husband actually talked to the Priest at our TLM parish, because it’s not even in the diocese in which we live. He told us that we have an obligation to guard our Souls and to form them rightly. If we CANNOT receive that at our local parish we are free to go somewhere that allows us to do that. How can we raise our children to know, love, and serve God if the local parish doesn’t support the true Worship of God??? And I’m not in anyway saying that ALL OF parishes are like this. I’ve been to a few good ones. But there are those that are grossly deficient in the department of authentic worship of God. Do what is best for the formation of you and your family!!

Good Job! Your Priest is exactly right. We used to drive 1.5 hours one way to go the TLM - now we have one that’s about 50 minutes away (one way) which we go to every Sunday.

If there was an Institute of Christ the King parish nearby ( even one in a small log hut) I’d be there in a flash. And with the kids. Pull them out of the NO parish. You’ll find like minded people nearby.

As it is we drive 2 1/4 hours each way to an FSSP parish north of us. And yes, we raised 7 kids. so we know that it can be tough on ocassion. But its worth every minute.

I find following this thread a bit difficult due to my lack of understanding the abbreviations used in the responses. I think a good format to use when using abbreviations is to use the full name first then use the abbreviations therafter. It would help those who do not know what they are. Now could some one please fill in the blanks:

TLM The Latin Mass
FSSP Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter
NO Novus Ordo Mass
SSPX
EF
OF
OP
ICRSS
Sedevacantist
ICKSP

Also what is the difference between the EF, OF, and OP Masses?

Thanks

Sedevacantist
Sedevacantism is the position held by a minority of Traditionalist Catholics who claim that the Papal See has been vacant since either the death of Pope Pius XII in 1958 or Pope John XXIII in 1963.
Sedevacantists believe that Paul VI (1963–1978), John Paul I (1978), John Paul II (1978–2005) and Benedict XVI (since 2005) have been neither true Catholics nor true Popes, by virtue of allegedly having espoused the heresy of Modernism, or of having otherwise denied or contradicted solemnly defined Catholic dogmas. Some of them classify John XXIII (1958–1963) also as a Modernist antipope.
The term “sedevacantism” is derived from the Latin phrase sede vacante, which literally means “the seat being vacant”, the seat in question being that of a bishop. A specific use of the phrase is in the context of the vacancy of the Holy See between the death or resignation of a Pope and the election of his successor. “Sedevacantism” as a term in English appears to date from the 1980s, though the movement itself is older.[1]
Some small groups of Traditionalist Catholics give allegiance to alternative Popes of their own. Since they hold that the Holy See is headed by their nominee and therefore is not in fact vacant, they are not sedevacantists in the strict sense, and are sometimes called “conclavists”. However, the term “sedevacantist” is often applied to them because they reject the generally accepted papal succession.

I may be able to provide some guidance as we attended a parish in our town but have stopped going there and we now go an Institute of Christ the King, (ICKSP), Church. I asked the Christ the King Priest about my obligation to the parish within our boundaries and, paraphrasing, this is what he told me:

Since the ICKSP in our area is not a “parish” it does not have boundaries and we can be registered in our home parish and in the ICKSP Church. However, we do need to support both if we are going to be registered to both.

The ICKSP in our area offers Catechism classes but the time is not feasible for my family. Our children attend public schools and the classes are at a time more in line for home-schoolers, which the vast majority of the families in the Church do. The Priest recommended a couple of books for me and I will be doing the Catechism for our children. I did not come to this conclusion lightly. The breaking points were that in the last 4 months our kids spent one full night of religious education talking about internet safety and then my oldest advised me that she did not understand why she could not get communion if she missed Mass. The religious education teacher never covered that subject in relation to reconciliation.

Fortunately our ICKSP Church is only a 20 minute drive away. It is also in a sketchy area but most of the riff-raff is not up and around at 10 a.m. on Sunday. 🙂

One may, of course, attend Mass in any diocese, but generally one may only be enrolled in his own geographic diocese (unless one is part of a “personal prelacy” or something of that nature (e.g. the forthcoming Anglican-use Ordinariate) or unless one has “quasi-domicile” in another geographic jurisdiction). Unfortunately, it’s similar on the parish level, unless there is a “personal parish” available. I think (and I’m not sure about this) that the ICRSS parish in St Louis is constituted as a “personal parish” and it may be that the “cornfield church” is as well. A “personal parish” would seem to be the best option, even if it’s some distance from home.
Your probably right, except for the fact that, in the year 1988, John Paul II, with the Apostolic Letter given as Motu Proprio, ‘Ecclesia Dei,’ exhorted bishops to make generous use of this power (the indult) in favor of all the faithful who so desired.
Then, in 2,007, Pope Benedict issued Summorum Pontificum & expressed his wishes that both the Bishops & priests make the Mass of 1962 available to people who want it. If one’s Bishop & priests have not done this, they should have… & their neglect to act upon the wishes of **two Popes **allows one to find a holy & reverent Mass wherever one can & to join a parish that will foster your faith & your children’s.
