Finding Particular Orders

Hello!

I have been doing research about different orders, and I know, if I decide to join, I want to join an order that wears traditional habits. Another thing that I have always been interested in is being a missionary. Do you know of any orders that wear the traditional habits, yet are missionary sisters? Thank you in advance! 🙂

I’ve looked around on the website, but I haven’t contacted them.
I would want to be a missionary to the poorest of the poor, possibly sections of Africa. I’d definitely be open giving medical care, but I’d want to combine that with religious instruction such as teaching the catechism. I don’t even know if an order like this exists, I am just kind of thinking out loud. 🙂
 
Where are you located?

Look locally first.

There are the Franciscan Missionaries for Africa, but they wear civies and a cross, no habit.

Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa.

Perhaps some of the African congregations would permit you to join?

Blessed Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity are international.

Be a chaste home missionary right now. Don’t ignore the poorest of the poor under your own nose. Are there any charitable organizations to which you could belong locally while you’re discerning. (This is along the lines of a nurse wanna-be becoming a Candy Striper).

Fr. Frank Pavone considers the poorest of the poor to be the unborn.

If you can’t be where you’re inspired to be, be there in spirit through prayer. I ask St. Daniel Comboni to pray for you.

Right now I live in New York. Thank you for your suggestions, especially the one about being a home missionary right now. I will look into more local opportunities to help out! Thank you for your prayers!

You could try looking on this site. They have published a directory of religious life since long before the internet.

Go see the Little Sisters of the Poor in Queens. They have missionaries though
out the world, wear a habit and take care of the poor elderly in poor countries as well as here in the states. If you want to do nursing they have need of LPNs, RNs and in all phases of apostolic care in their homes. They prefer that you have your education in your desired field, but would be happy to talk to you about your vocation. There is a home in the Queens that you might be a volunteer in.
 
I like your idea. I think there’s a lot to be said for religious wearing habits and clericals—it really is a big way to say, “hey, Catholics are alive and well and here we are; this isn’t ‘out of date’ but the date never changed! We’re a reality and a force in the present world.”

They have several convents in New York, and run overseas missions in Third World countries. (They also have some rather unusual religious names: a Sister with whom I spoke at World Youth Day in Sydney introduced herself as Sister Ark of the Covenant!)
