First communion gift of opal

The main gift that my family gave for first communion were jewelry. I was raised Lutheran, and a gift of opal was what we always received. My grandmother, my mother and myself received Opal rings. My foreign exchange student from Madrid also said that opal is the main gift in her family. My mother in law (of no religious offiliation) asked “why opal”. I really have no official answer other than, “it’s just a tradition”. She still insists to know why. Can anyone help me?
