My son is to receive First Communion on a Saturday morning in May with the rest of the children in faith formation.

My dilemma is that I accepted a new job and my training includes every Saturday & my scheduled hours are during my sons First Communion. I thought about just calling out that morning, but I cannot miss any of my training or I will be terminated.

I talked to my son who is 8 and told him that my new job required me to be at work during his first communion. I explained that his Dad, sister and Grandma would be with him and we would have cake and a little celebration when I got home from work that day.

I feel awful because he did not take the news very well - I wouldn’t have either. We discussed other options and I told him if he didnt mind not being with his class he might be able to receive First Communion at a mass when I could go?

I do not want to miss his First Communion so I need to know if he can receive First Communion without the other children at a Saturday night Mass or Sunday Morning Mass? Im assuming its a personal decision when to receive First Communion and doesn’t necessarily have to be done with the class? Im hopeful this is an option?

Thank you

Definitely talk to his teacher or the director of the religious ed program and explain your situation. I taught sacramental prep for many years, and occasionally there was a situation where a child couldn’t make it to the group Mass. Father was very accommodating about doing a special First Communion for that child at a different date.

I hope something can be worked out for you!

I hope your Pastor is accommodating. When DD made her First Communion the set up was such that the kids met with Father when the parents thought they were ready to receive. Fr. interviewed them and if he agreed that they were ready they got to receive at the next Mass they attended. They just had to let him know it was going to happen.

Any Mass can be his first communion, and it will be his FIRST time.
One of our former pastors accommodated an autistic child by who could not be at the group Mass, by allowing her to receive at the Mother’s Day Mass. It was special for her mom. They sat in the front pew, and during his homily, he pointed out that we would be having this child’s First Holy Communion. The ushers made sure that people hung back and allowed this family to receive together and it was very special. They received many congratulations after, and lots of people wanted to pose for pictures with her.
It’s not a big problem. Your pastor will likely work with you. Just ask.

I have attended First Communion that was for one child only and it was a deeply meaningful family and community occasion as it was at their weekly mass. Hoping it will be done for you and your son… Please God so

It was a tiny church congregation and arranged rather than relocate her to a neighbouring Church… Her brother will be in the same situation this year.

Thank you For replying! I’m eager to discuss my options with the director of faith Formation at our church later this week. I’m hoping that we can figure something out so I can be with my son at his First Communion? It’s such a special time for him so I pray that everything works out? Thanks for the advice

I hope the pastor will accommodate your son due to you not wanting to miss this special time due to your work thing. God’s Blessings for your son when the day to receive comes 🙂

I’m so excited for you all! Keep us updated. I know this is sad but hoping you look back and have lovely memories. :hug1:
