What is proper attire for a child receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time? Our church is not attire however I know it is a special occassion. Any recommendations?
Sorry, “our church is a casual dress parish”.What is proper attire for a child receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time? Our church is not attire however I know it is a special occassion. Any recommendations?
While I confess I’m not sure what this means since no parish I’ve ever attended has had a specific dress code, I cannot imagine that wearing special clothes to emphasize the importance of the event would be inappropriate.Sorry, “our church is a casual dress parish”.
The girls are usually in white dresses & veils; the boys are in either a white, navy blue or black suit & tie. What is proper attire for a child receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time? Our church is not attire however I know it is a special occassion. Any recommendations?
I remember when I made my First Communion.
You had to wear a white dress. And you had to wear the veil that every other little girl wore. You were only allowed to purchase them from the parish, and you had to purchase one.
All of the little boys had to wear the same tie.
That was in the 70’s.
Now, parishes seem to be a little more flexible.
No one is required to wear anything specific.
Boys are requested to wear “dress clothes.” But a tie, jacket or even a dress shirt isn’t required. I have seen boys in khakis and a polo /QUOTE]
It was the same ways back in the '50’s.![]()

I love this - - I wish more people knew and followed this advice! My eldest son wore a suit which someone gave to us, but it was too big for any of his younger brothers. They all wore khaki dressy slacks, oxford shirt, tie, and jacket (handed down and handed down again! They didn’t mind. I think each boy got his own new tie). My daughter had a beautiful white dress that I bought at a second hand store, but by the time of her first communion, she didn’t fit in it anymore! It was far too short.
I wound up finding her a lovely new dress at JC Penney, on sale for $27. She wore a veil (remade my wedding veil over for her), fancy white socks with lace, and white shoes. No gloves or purse.
All the other little girls had white dresses, some gown-length, and the “bustier” type dresses (with no sleeves) were just beginning to make an appearance. ** The pastor “strongly suggested” that the girls NOT wear that attire since traditionally girls and women were to wear sleeves, shoulders covered, at mass. **
Guests wore dressy street clothes for women and suits or at least tie & jacket for men.
