What is proper attire for a child receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time? Our church is not attire however I know it is a special occassion. Any recommendations?

Sorry, “our church is a casual dress parish”.

I remember when I made my First Communion.

You had to wear a white dress. And you had to wear the veil that every other little girl wore. You were only allowed to purchase them from the parish, and you had to purchase one.

All of the little boys had to wear the same tie.

That was in the 70’s.

Now, parishes seem to be a little more flexible.

No one is required to wear anything specific.

Boys are requested to wear “dress clothes.” But a tie, jacket or even a dress shirt isn’t required. I have seen boys in khakis and a polo.

Girls also wear dress clothes. All of the young girls, that I see, wear a white dress. Not all wear a veil. Some wear nothing in their hair, some have flowers and some a bow, and of course some wear a veil. Of the older girls, some have worn a different color but not white.

I have seen this even with families that don’t normally dress up for Mass. (Our parish runs the gamut, for dress. We have men in suits and men in jeans. We have women in dresses with heels and women in capri pants. 🤷 )

While I confess I’m not sure what this means since no parish I’ve ever attended has had a specific dress code, I cannot imagine that wearing special clothes to emphasize the importance of the event would be inappropriate.

Girls usually wear white dresses, often with white veils.

Boys often wear suits. I don’t have kids, but if I could help it, I would never allow my son to wear khakis and a polo (!) for first communion.

None of this is written in stone at a high level, but you can always clarify with the priest.

The girls are usually in white dresses & veils; the boys are in either a white, navy blue or black suit & tie.

My eldest son wore a suit which someone gave to us, but it was too big for any of his younger brothers. They all wore khaki dressy slacks, oxford shirt, tie, and jacket (handed down and handed down again! They didn’t mind. I think each boy got his own new tie). My daughter had a beautiful white dress that I bought at a second hand store, but by the time of her first communion, she didn’t fit in it anymore! It was far too short.

I wound up finding her a lovely new dress at JC Penney, on sale for $27. She wore a veil (remade my wedding veil over for her), fancy white socks with lace, and white shoes. No gloves or purse.

All the other little girls had white dresses, some gown-length, and the “bustier” type dresses (with no sleeves) were just beginning to make an appearance. The pastor “strongly suggested” that the girls NOT wear that attire since traditionally girls and women were to wear sleeves, shoulders covered, at mass.

Guests wore dressy street clothes for women and suits or at least tie & jacket for men.

At our parish, girls wear a white dress and veil and boys wear a navy blue suit with a white tie. Classic is always appropriate.

It was the same ways back in the '50’s. 😃 :gopray:

Every parish we’ve been in since the mid 80s has had “clean and modest” clothes as the only requirement for First Communion. That was actually a question in my elementary school catechism: How must we dress to go to Mass? We must dress in clean and modest clothes.

We were trying very hard to get the kids to focus more on the sacrament and less on what they were going to wear. Some families opted for the ‘little bride’ look but I went with a simple “little girl” white dress with a pink sash for our daughter. Our boys wore shirt and tie and dress pants.

My sympathies to you for your “Casual Dress parish”. :sad_yes:

Last year, at a “casual dress” parish, I saw a y oung girl at First Holy Communion wearing white leggings and a silky/satiny top, and a boy wearing what I would describe as “cargo” shorts, with a button-down shirt, and a tie.

Not to judge of course, but it was nigh-on impossible not to.

Yep me and my brother and most others boys we wore black pants white shirt and a bow tie.
Girls wore white dress and vial some had white gloves. Of course that was in the late 60’s.

2 years ago my nephew wore black pants white shirt and black tie his cousin wore white dress and vial.

Wow not much of a difference looking back on it now.

I love this - - I wish more people knew and followed this advice!
To the original post - - our parish has a meeting or two before the big day. Maybe they will give you more advice then? Maybe you can google the name of your parish, and “first communion”, and you might see photos from previous years?

It seems I described the parish too harshly. It is not so casual as to see shorts for example but not frowned upon to have ladies wear nice dress slacks. I still find it most comfortable to wear a dress when in the Presence. Of course I know The Lord doesn’t judge by the outward appearance.
