Hello all,

I am a convert entering the church this weekend at the Easter Vigil and I will be going to my first confession this evening. I’m just looking for some encouragement since I will be doing a general confession that is face to face since it has been scheduled. I’ve taken the time to write down a list of things I need to confess and now that it is all written down there are definitely some items I am very ashamed of and know will be difficult to say in front of a priest who I have come to greatly respect. I will have some time in adoration before I go in so I am hoping that will calm my nerves a little.

Any other advice?

Peace be with you! The worst part will be waiting to speak with the priest and the first minute or two at the beginning. The priest will be very kind and understanding and he couldn’t care less what you tell him. Afterward, you will feel the most peaceful and the most free you have ever felt in your life, you might want to plan a little celebration or treat for later. It will be ok. :hug3:

Like Catholic1954 said, the hardest part is starting, but once you do, it gets better. Go in peace.

One does not have to go face to face.

Even if scheduled.

One may always ask for the screen.

If for some reason there is none currently available - one may ask the priest to sit not facing you. I myself prefer the screen or this way rather than face to face. Tis your right.

Remember too one does not “have” to confess venial sins (I am not saying not too- it is good to) -only the mortal sins and their number…

Fear not - Priests have already heard more than you have!!

Well congrats and welcome home 🙂

Secondly, there is nothing you can tell the priest that he hasn’t already heard. Well, ok, he probably didn’t hear a Jeffrey Dahmer type confession, but generally speaking, he has heard it all, imo.

And also, the priest realizes this is your first confession. It’s meant to be a place of mercy, not a torture chamber.

This is truly one of the gems of our faith. Utilize it often.

As Padre Pio said, even empty rooms get dusty after a week or so.

Congratulations & welcome home. Be at peace in remembering that no matter what our sins have been; Jesus in his infinite mercy & love will forgive us & welcome us back into his loving arms every time. Also, you will not be telling the Priest anything he probably has not heard before. God bless.

Relax. The priest will know it’s your first time, and will help you along if you seem to be struggling. And try not to worry about embarrassment. The priest has almost certainly heard it all before and won’t bat an eye.

And remember, you need to be clear about what you’re confessing, but you don’t necessarily need to go into all the gory, embarrassing details.

I would like to add that most likely the honest confession you present will be beneficial to your ‘taste’ of God, of the sweetness of His Wisdom.

But you will have a narrow road to trod. In the words of St. Augustine: “If you should ask me what are the ways of God, I would tell you that the first is humility, the second is humility, and the third is humility. Not that there are no other precepts to give, but if humility does not precede all that we do, our efforts our meaningless.”

St. Anthony the Great, a desert father, was shown a vision of all the snares the devils had placed in the world. He asked the angel how can one overcome these snares - He answered, “Humility”.

How does one become humble? By not recognizing/acknowledging it in/to himself. And as Saint Philip Neri said - by frequent confession.

Finally ask Mary to develop a mature, true, and deeper devotion to herself, so she can give you a deeper union with her Son in Eucharistic Adoration. Follow this, and you will be saved by your perseverance. God Bless you.

Afterward, you will feel the most peaceful and the most free you have ever felt in your life, you might want to plan a little celebration or treat for later. It will be ok. :hug3:
Amen. :gopray: Krislavis, blessings and welcome! Catholic1954 is so right. After your bravery will come the greatest joy! Take heart, friend. 🙂 I’m saying some prayers for you. This will be such a beautiful evening for you, truly. Stay strong; you’ll see! :extrahappy:

I hope your first confession went well. I no it is all over by now but for the future it is ALWAYS best to confess the hardest/most ashamed items first. I PREFER going face to face although in my church we do NOT have the option. The priest does know who he is speaking to as he does NOT sit in the confessional waiting for people. In my parish we must approach the priest and ask for our confession to be heard and he will hear it up to 5-10 minutes before Mass.

Thank you everyone,

My first confession went well and I have gone back since to confess other things that I forgot to include in my general confession. It really is a wonderful and merciful place.
