Today was my first day teaching Confirmation class. My class was pretty lethargic until we got to the third page of the first chapter and I choose to expand on the natural law explanation. From there we discussed abortion, death penalty, confession, God’s forgiveness vs. victim’s forgiveness, solicited forgiveness vs. unsolicited forgiveness, self defense vs. all out fighting, sport fighting (boxing, wrestling, etc) vs. all out fighting, venial and mortal sin. This was all in 1 hr 15 min. I am worn out!

God bless you, not the easiest age to teach, maybe the hardest, but believe me by the time this year is over you will know more about the faith than you ever realized you didn’t know.

Wow. Sounds like an impressive curriculum! I have to confess that our material is a piece of cake compared to yours. Tonight was my first night doing the same thing and I was a bit disappointed that there was not more “meat” in the material we were supposed to teach – the RCIA in our Parish was also a bit more “touchy feely” and less meat too. I may have to supplement it with some extra quotes or readings from the Catechism or some Early Fathers 😃

Of course, I have to believe they are keeping it light because probably all of our students are in Catholic High School so they get a lot of the “meat” in their Religion classes so I won’t go too crazy.

At least I hope they are learning more somewhere else.

What we discussed was not part of the curriculum. I asked for examples of what falls under natural law and let the students run with it (the students are in 8th - 11th grade). I just had to provide answers, which was challenging.

I don’t like to stick with just the curriculum. It does not allow me to discover what parts of their faith the students are struggling with and address them. I rather use the curriculum as a jumping of point for more in depth discussions.

It is pretty much the same approach I take with my 7th grade daughter. I can pick one faith topic I want to discuss with her and we can end up having a discussion that cover the gamete of faith topics/issues.
