When I was young, the good sisters at my school told us the following tale:
There was an old man who lived with his son, daughter-in-law, and young grandson. The old man was a senile. He was forced to eat his gruel out of a wooden bowl with a wooden spoon, because his daughter-in-law was afraid he would break the china dishes. He sat, largely ignored, in a rocker in a corner of the room most of the day.
Finally, the day came when the younger couple were tired of taking care of the old man. The son loaded the old grandfather up in the wagon, still clutching his wooden bowl. The young grandson came along on the trip. The son was taking his father to a cliff, where he would be tossed over the side, to “end his misery.”
When they arrived, the father had the little boy help him get grandfather out of the wagon. Just as the man was about to toss his father over the side, the little boy shouted,
“Wait, Father! Shouldn’t we keep the bowl? We might need it for you someday.”
I was mildly saddened by such an attitude when I was a 10 year old, back in 1966. I never, ever thought I would live to see such a day. I just hope they saved the woman’s bowl.
May God have mercy on their souls. God save the Netherlands.

I’m having a really hard time wrapping my head around this? I can’t believe it. A government sanctioning a murder/suicide. I can’t believe we are heading down this slippery slope. I’m deeply saddened and frankly at a loss for words. When I think of what this could lead to, I’m so frightened. What if it comes to a point where governments make decisions about who gets to live or die based on “economic viability” or something like that. Holy Mary, pray for us.
