So, I am a new DRE and we have our First Communion scheduled in May. I’ve had a couple parents ask me how we are going to do it? Since I am very new to the position, I replied, “it will probably look similar to last year.” A couple of parents groaned. I asked them if they could be let me know what about the past sacraments that they did not like. They told me that they didn’t like that the entire family goes up with their child receiving for the first time. They would prefer that all of the children sit together and go up together, I think. It really wasn’t clear.

I want this to be a special day for the children, so I am looking for opinions/positives/negatives on ways to celebrate the sacrament. They will be receiving the sacrament during one of our regular Sunday mass times.

Any suggestions would be helpful! TIA

I think your pastor is the first one to talk with. Does he have a “usual way” that he expects you to follow?

Obviously, check with the pastor, but I’ve been part of both ways.

I much prefer the one with children sitting with their families. So, why?

When children sit with their families, their family is responsible for them. At my son’s first communion, girls were allowed to have purses if they wanted. The children could use personal Mass Books. And Mom/Dad/Grandparent could help keep track of everything. It also mimics what they will be doing next week.

At our current parish, the children sit together. And then the teacher is responsible for the children. You can certainly tell the difference.
