So I heard that the story of Moses borrowed from a Mesopotamian legend and that the rites and laws explained in these five books are similar to those in other Near Eastern regions. Are these things true? Also, how historical is the Exodus?

Correlation does not imply causation.

Just because there might be similar stories doesn’t imply that one comes from the other.

It could also be used to say that such an event actually happened and stories of the event have been carried to other places in the world and some may have lost some truth.

Well could it be the laws are basically written on the human heart? So someone somewhere else also heard the Holy Spirit and wrote stuff down?

Where did you get that from? Just because you heard it doesn’t mean that it is accurate at all. There are some similar parrallels between Judiasm/ Christianty and then some of the other religions as the time Moses lived.

When you hear such stuff as this always ask for the original sources that prove it. Are there any existing Mesopotamian writings that offer word-for-word evidence of this theory. If not, someone is just spouting nonsense.

Thanks for the replies. This came out of my college history textbook and that’s what gave me the initial concern. I’d assume the authors would have some sources. I could look back over things and do further investigation.
