Good Morning 🙂

I was wondering about First Fridays and First Saturdays. Would someone be willing to elaborate on that topic for me? Other that abstaining on Fridays in general, what is required for those days?

(I was received into the Church on Aug 22 and am still figuring things out grin There’s so much to remember and it’s easy to get overwhelmed!)

Thanks!

~Jess

The first Friday is a devotion to the Sacred Heart, and the first Saturday is a devotion to the Blessed Virgin.

At the back of your church there may be some literature concerning either or both or if you are still in need I shall fish my lit. out of my “oratory” for tomorrow if need be. God Bless You

Mornin’

Thanks for the info - I keep a good eye on the lit available at my parish, and have never run across anything about this.

If you feel like digging out your lit, I would appreciate it, but I’m sure that with a little internet sleuthing and raiding of my bookshelves, I can figure it out 🙂

Have you tried google?

It’s a bit more than just a devotion. It consists of a couple of parts. The first is to go to confession on or as close as possible to the first Friday of each month so that you’re in a state of grace to receive Communion.

Secondly, you attend Mass and take communion for nine consecutive First Fridays, and perhaps say an Act of Reparation and/or other prayers to the Sacred Heart.

And then on First Saturdays you attend Mass again, and pray five decades of the Rosary (plus fifteen more minutes meditating on one or more further mysteries of the Rosary - which can just mean a few more decades) for Our Lady. This is only for five consecutive First Saturdays. You don’t have to do both devotions if you prefer to do just one.

I came across the Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion, which is the First Fridays:

To those who receive Holy Communion on 9 consecutive first Fridays, Jesus promises the following:
  • I will give them all the graces necessary for their state in life.
  • I will establish peace in their families.
  • I will console them in all their pains and trials.
  • I will be their assured refuge in life and especially in death…
  • I will shed abundant blessings on all their undertakings.
  • Lukewarm souls will become fervent.
  • Fervent souls shall rise to greater perfection.
  • I will bless those homes where an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored.
  • I will give to priests the gift of moving the hardest of hearts.
  • Persons, who propagate this devotion, shall have their names inscribed on My Heart, never to be effaced from it.
