First Friday Devotion - Requirements

Hello! Can anyone point me in the direction of something that authoritatively says what the requirements are for the First Friday Devotion please? I keep seeing various sources, but it really boils down to doing these things for nine consecutive First Fridays: (1) go to Mass on a First Friday, (2) receive Communion on a First Friday, and (3) go to the sacrament of Confession (generally 8 days before or 8 days after the First Friday).

I really am questioning number 1. Is Mass a requirement, or will a Communion Service on a First Friday “count”? If it must be a Mass, do we just go by what qualifies for fulfilling a Sunday Obligation, or are there different rules? It crossed my mind because today, in the middle of my First Friday Devotion, I arrived late to Mass (during the homily). I know that would count for fulfilling one’s Sunday Obligation, but what about this devotion? Has anything been written about whether or not Mass is really a requirement here?

The requirement is receiving Holy Communion on 9 consecutive Fridays, NOT Mass.
A Communion Service at your church would work to fulfill the requirement.
Attending Mass but not receiving Communion wouldn’t work.
The point of the whole devotion was to encourage people to receive Holy Communion more frequently at a time when people generally only received it maybe once a year, or a couple times a year, because people thought they were too unworthy.

There is no Confession requirement for First Friday, unless you are out of the state of grace, in which case you need to go to confession to get back in a state of grace before you receive Communion.

Thank you - is this something you just “know” or can you point me to an authoritative source? I’m hoping someone can direct me to the latter.

The reason why websites all say “go to Mass and receive Holy Communion” is that most of them are not anticipating that Communion is going to be offered outside of Mass.

Also, THE most authoritative source is Christ’s own words to St. Margaret Mary as reported by herself:
" In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour ."
