First Friday

Hi,

My children and I are making our 9 First Fridays, and our 8th First Friday happens to be on April 3 (Good Friday). I don’t know what to do about that since there is no Mass on that day. Does the First Friday in May count for our 8th Mass, or possibly a Mass on Holy Thursday might count toward First Friday?

Please help!

Wow. I don’t know. It kinda seems like a technicality to me since Mass cannot be celebrated on Good Friday. You can receive Holy Communion on Good Friday. I would have to think that the liturgy on Good Friday would count.
 
i have heard that in such a case, the second Sunday of April serves as the First Friday for April but i do not have any hard evidence to back this up. i don’t remember where i read that.
 
That was a problem when I was young. You needed to plan ahead to avoid the conflict.

However, as I read it, the requirement is to receive Communion on the First Friday. Attending mass, while desirable, is not necessary. I recall many who could not attend the whole mass would come in just for Communion.

When they first moved the Easter Vigil to midnight it ruined First Saturdays sometimes, but, now that it is in the evening, that is no longer a problem
 
I’m a newbie (still in RCIA) and I don’t know what doing First Friday means (though it sounds like it has something to do with going to mass on the first friday of each month?). Could someone explain? Also, what is the significance of doing 9 of them in a row?

Might I humbly suggest that y’all reread the promise to St Margaret Mary regarding the Nine First Fridays:

The requirement is that you receive Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays, NOT that you attend Mass.

Communion is certainly distributed at Good Friday liturgies, so receiving it then would fulfil the requirement.

That’s a great link!

When we did First Fridays for the first time we carefully planned when to start. Once you’ve been 9 times in a row, it becomes a wonderful habit.
