We do not have much money but want to do something after Mass to commemorate this very special day. We do not have family in state either. Any ideas?

I am so sad that Pope John Paul ll is dying. I need to focus on something else for a few moments. Indulge me, please.

Thank you.

Have a picnic in the park and take pictures.
My family has pictures of my sisters for their first communion in a park setting and I find that those pictures are among the most viewed ones in our household.

Good idea MParedon, You could also invite some friends and call for a Potluck picnic.

It’s not about the money, it’s about sharing this special day with friends.

These are good ideas. 🙂 I’m receiving my first communion this Sunday.

the best celebrations are those that recall the special aspects of Eucharist, the Mass and Communion that is why a special meal, appropriate gifts (stress proper thank-you both oral and written, by reminding the child of the meaning of Eucharist: thanksgiving), gathering as a family of faith, welcoming, etc. You are able to avoid a frequent pitfall, that of having the party become more important than the sacrament (happens with weddings as well), try to spend a little time, maybe bedtime, or a few days later, quietly talking about the sacrament and the experience, help your child to reflect on it. Also, remember he did not graduate from religious education, he is just beginning, make sure his formation in the faith continues.

Thoughtful replies, all. I wish to commemorate this day for my child in a meaningful way, one she can look back on and recall with deep sense of belonging to the Catholic Church. I see a wonderful way to focus on this in the above post. Moreover, thoughtful reflection has got to be key in making this day more meaningful and memorable to my daughter. Very well stated, Puzzleannie. Thank you.

We had our Jesus Day retreat for first communion candidates and families this morning. began with prayer for the Pope of course, and liturgy of the Word. We had several activities based on the Easter, with the theme being Light for the World = making Easter candles, flame nametags, etc. the highlight was our snack, which was prepared by the children and they served their parents. the opposite of what usually happens. The parents loved it, and we made sure they undestood the dismissal from Mass, to go out to love and serve the Lord, by loving and serving His people. My point is there may be other families in the same situation, not a lot of family around, who might like to join together for a picnic or other celebration, share the cost of food etc.

Sounds like a wonderful event, puzzleannie. Whereabouts in Southeast Texas are you located. Just wondering 'cause I’m in the same area.

newly joined to your diocese, d of Brownsville. had communions at 4 Masses this weekend, several giggles, some sighs, lots of exasperation, but mostly joy. Entire families brought back to the Church through the graces of one child’s prepration for and reception of Holy Communion. Children of catechists who still do not know the proper and reverent way to receive. Entire families sitting in the pew, having exhibited to all their ignorance of the Mass, while child approaches communion alone. Excited relatives who insist, inspite of warning from the pulpit in regarding the Mass as a photo op and entertainment staged for their enjoyment. School age child (not from this parish) who munched an entire bag of hot cheetos throughout the Mass as parents sat oblivious. kids genuflecting to deacon, DRE, windows, each other, everywhere except to the tabernacle. my personal favorite, child in the front row who imitated every motion of the priest, including his hand directions to guide us in the latin responses. evaluation of our job in preparing these kids: C+ needs remedial work. well let’s move on to next year. enjoy your first communion celebrations, everyone, and make sure your child has a Second Communion.
