Hi everyone, I’m excited to say I took the next step in my journey and reached out to the RCIA director at the parish in my hometown to find out what steps I need to take in order to be confirmed next Easter. She wants to set up a meeting with me next week. What is typically done at these meetings? What questions will she likely ask? Is there a chance I will be deterred because of my age? (I’m only 17) Just looking for an idea of what to expect. Thank you!

The interview is probably just a routine thing to assess your interest and needs. You probably have no impediments like past marriages. If you will be 18 by the time you join the Church, age should not be an issue. I have heard of people waiting until they are are 18 to officially join the Church when there is family opposition to it.

RCIA programs seem to vary in content and style. There is no substitute for doing one’s own reading. Here are some recommendations:

Catholicism for Dummies by Father Trigilio

The Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Compendium of the Catechism (Question and Answer format)

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible New Testament

Your local parish will have Mass this Palm Sunday and Easter and probably special Holy Week (the week before Easter) services also.

Watch EWTN for Mass and other TV/radio programming. The main Catholic Answers website has a lot of good material.

I’m getting confirmed next year! (almost 14) praying for you ;D

Good luck! Welcome to the family! Praying for your success.

Just relax, take it all in with an open heart, mind & soul. Let the Holy Spirit guide you along. God bless you on your RCIA journey. I’ll be praying for you.

In my initial interview with people I’m basically trying to get to know them a little, trying to fill them in on what RCIA is all about and what they can expect, and trying to answer any questions they have.

I’d ask questions about what led to your interest in RCIA, whether you are baptized or not, whether you grew up in a religious home or not. Because of your age I would ask about how your parents feel about this and whether they support what you’re doing. If you were older I’d be asking about whether you are married or have been married in the past and also ask about your children, if any. Many times one parent entering RCIA means that we need to make sure that the other spouse and children have all their pastoral needs met as well.

If you have any questions about what to expect this would be a good time to ask them.

Blessings as you begin this journey.

She most likely will ask questions to determine where you are on your faith journey and start some paperwork. Do you have a baptismal certificate from another church? You will be asked to submit it, if you have one. Welcome Home! :grouphug:

If you are worried about getting behind, read my signature below. I wouldn’t be anxious, it will all be ok.

At a first meeting, they’ll probably just want to know if you’ve been baptized, if you have any religious background, what makes you have an interest in the Catholic Church, etc.

I would recommend lowering your expectations about RCIA. Maybe you’ll stumble across one of the few good programs, but more likely, you’ll just have to suffer through it and pray it doesn’t damage your faith too much or even discourage you completely from joining the church.

I absolutely loved RCIA so much so they could not get rid of me for the next few years. LOL I was already a Catholic but had been away from the Church for a long while and still needed to make my Confirmation. I absolutely loved the classes. My son went after I did and he was 12 or 13 at the time and the teacher for the children’ class wanted him in her class. The kids were all under 11 and he wanted in the adult class. The Priest agreed and so he was in the adult class. He learned a ton and really enjoyed the classes.

I will remember you in prayer as you go through your journey. Enjoy the classes there is plenty to keep the interest going far beyond the classes too.

NOTHING TO FEAR!

Sounds like she MAY ???} be going for individual instruction here???

The NORM [can be changed by the Pastor] is from Back to School to Easter; BUT individual instruction is not that uncommon.

The meeting will be a get to know each other and an exposure to the RCIA Course, which CAN vary from parish to parish.

She may ???] suggest some reading materials

Pray much and ASK lots of questions

God Bless you

Patrick
