Hi! Can some of you share their first experience living with a religious community? How was it? When I think of it, I feel so happy but nervous, and shy!

Thanks! May all of us be filled with the love of God!

Thomas

Living in community was a wonderful experience. Praying together, singing, sharing meals, and working toward common goals is something I truly miss.
There are challenges, to be sure. But you have others who share them.
You are in my prayers. You are in a position to do so much good in God’s name.

Hey Tom,

My first month visiting my community was outstanding. We were in Rome for a while and then in the mountains. It was so ridiculously beautiful, and then it was my first experience of daily holy hour, and still more I was able to speak with people who were in daily contact with God and who had grown in holiness. I loved it.

What a surprise when I had decided to join one year later and I was totally distraught. Jet lag. Oppressive heat without air conditioning. Trouble with the language. Trouble with pride as I had to do “menial tasks” like clean our bathroom (gross!). I also let my thoughts get a little carried away and began to think “I’ve been tricked.” Thanks be to God for my spiritual director who put things into perspective with one question… “Did you think it’d be easy?” And a little later added, “Nothing is difficult if you want it…” The 2 lines pulled me through that tough time to where I am today 6 years later, loving my community, finishing my studies for the priesthood, and praising God for his abundant mercy… You’ll be in my heart…

Thank you very much, this is very inspiring. Thank you, thank you! 🙂

thank u for your sharing! Why, where are the Apostles based? I would also like to know how does it feel to be with the whole community. how did they treat you?

Thank you very much!

Hey Tom,

Our house of formation is in Rome… really hot in the summer and no AC! They all treated me as if I were Christ coming to visit, but the transformation that needed to take place was real. God put me in the crucible, and like gold I was purified. I was made stronger because I needed to be strong for the ministry that we do… and for God. Now, I cannot complain. I have HIS STRENGTH!

I went out to Slovakia when I was 18 as a postulant and it was a culture shock for sure. I can tell you more but you might want to read my blog as I have a good description on there about joining and my attitude towards it. I will post the link here but you can also send me a message through this website. I hope I am allowed to post here. If not, I apologise.
