First week at RCIA done!

Last night was my first week at RCIA and found it very informative. The Monsignor is teaching the course this year with the assistance of former students. Including me, there are 5 candidates this year. One is returning to finish off the course (she left half way). Two are married to Catholics for many years and were married in the Church but finally decided to convert. Both are Lutherans. One is looking into the faith after enrolling her son to Catholic school (she’s from an Evangelical Christian background). And then there’s me… baptized Catholic but didn’t received Communion or Confirmation as a child.

Overall, it was a nice 75 minutes of getting to know each other and getting to know the faith. After I was home, I started to read Genesis 1 and 2 (chapters I know through the NIV version) and noticed there wasn’t any changes of the story. As long as I remember, my family would tell me the Catholic bible is different. I don’t see any differences so far. If anything, the language is clearer in the Catholic bible. The Catechism definitely helps because one of my first questions were answered (it’s about angels). I’m definitely ready to Wednesday to ask questions and learn more. (Note: the Monsignor is going on a pilgromage to Fatima and Lourdes, so one of the priests will be conducting for the next 2 weeks)

Right now I need is prayer. My family still doesn’t know about my decision of taking RCIA classes. Yes, I’m an adult but I don’t want them to feel they failed because I went back home. I’ve already felt some resistance from my mom when I told her my fiance and I decided to get married at his (and soon to be my) home parish.

Thank you. Out of everyone in my family, I’m more nervous about telling my dad about it. He was the one who took us out of the church. He was very strict when my brother and I were growing up, saying if we don’t go to church, we will get whipped. Since my parents’ divorce, my relationship with my father had been very quiet. I only talk to him from time to time. I’m also nervous about telling my brother because he turned into my dad. He constantly criticizes religion, especially the Catholic church.

With that said, I’ve never been this comfortable and at peace as I am now. It started with “should I visit church?” to “when should I go?” to “which service I should attend?” to “is it Wednesday yet?”

An update: everything is great after 3 weeks but now I’ve hit a roadblock. For the past month, I was unemployed and was looking for a job. Yesterday, I was hired! While I am very happy about it, there is one catch: my job will overlap my RCIA class. RCIA is at 6:30pm but I need to be at work at 7:30pm. I don’t want to give up this opportunity but I want to continue my spiritual journey. Should I ask my priest to arrange something so I can continue? I’m off the weekends and Monday. I’m already at church for choir practice.
