We keep the Friday abstinence from meat, other than fish, year round. Because of work schedule changes, we are now day sleepers. We’re not sure which meals should be meatless. We eat at 6 p.m., midnight and 8 a.m. Ideally, it should be a full day’s worth of meals in my opinion, which would be three for us. Should we do midnight starting Friday, Friday morning and Friday evening maybe? That seems awkward because part of it is broken up by sleep, but we’re trying to keep the spirit of it.

What about fasting on Good Friday? Should we start the fast at midnight Friday morning, and start eating normal again midnight Saturday morning? That would mean Friday night’s/Saturday morning’s midnight “lunch” wouldn’t count towards the “one meal, two small snacks” rule.

I’m sure other Catholics have had this situation, and I’m sure there’s some standard answer by now?

Thank you, and God bless.

The Church defines the day as midnight to midnight. So, regardless of your sleeping/waking schedule, the abstinence from meat and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and abstinence from meat on Fridays of Lent (or all Fridays) is midnight Friday morning to 11:59 p.m. Friday night (midnight Saturday morning).

Thank you. Quick response too. You rock.

That’s what we figured, but we wanted to be sure because we want to do it right.

Yes always midnight to midnight however if you want to continue your penance if it feels right whats the harm in that? Just don’t eat meat on Friday I’m sure our Lord will appreciate that extra penance of going into the next day if you wish 👍
