I chose five, not necessarily my favorites, but movies with which I feel a certain connection as a life-long resident and old electrician of Los Angeles.
Singin’ in the Rain (1952) This was released around the year my parents met in Los Angeles. Also, I did electrical work on the old MGM movie lot where this movie was filmed (now Sony Pictures).
Die Hard (1988) I worked in the Fox Tower in Century City where this movie was filmed. The scenes with the floors under construction were very familiar to me.
Speed (1994) Filmed mostly on the Westside of L.A. where I grew up. Lots of familiar locations.
Volcano (1997) A cheesy movie, but I did a lot of work along the Wilshire Corridor where it was filmed.
La La Land (2016) Need I say more? In many ways a love-letter to my city, hearkening back to the old musicals like the one that started my list.
Bonus 6th movie: The Soloist (2009) I also did a lot of work in Downtown Los Angeles, and this movie captures well (albeit in an extraordinary way) the plight of the homeless and mentally ill, many of whom I encountered there every day.
I didn’t put that as a requirement because I didn’t want anyone to feel pressured into explaining their choices but yes if one wants to great. Here are the reasons for my selections…
Avalon (Family)
Babette’s Feast (The Eucharist)
My Favorite Year (Loyalty)
The Song of Bernadette (The Blessed Mother)
True Grit (Fatherhood)
When I posted, I didn’t want to take the time to explain each connection I have to
the films I listed. Too busy. If I have the energy at another time I might.
