Thousands of marchers, many waving flags, in the Little Armenia area outside Hollywood gathered Tuesday in the first of two marches to commemorate the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian genocide, which Turkey insists did not happen.

The first gathering, organized by Unified Young Armenians, began near Hollywood Boulevard and Western Avenue, where participants waved flags and began a circular march through the area, denouncing the genocide and calling on the United States government to officially recognize it.

It is nice to see these marchers commemorating the Armenian genocide so those atrocities are not forgotten.

And I believe the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk has gotten in hot water with the Turkish authorities for discussing the genocide in published articles.

The Turks are extremely reluctant to own up to the crimes of the past, even crimes committed 100 years ago. They flip out whenever an allied government even tries to mention the crimes against the Armenians.

Yeah, the Turks are very weird on this issue. Virtually every other nation, after this much time has passed has acknowledged when it was blatantly in the wrong. Some Americans make excuses for past American atrocities like carpet bombing etc, but rarely do you hear someone say that My Lai or Wounded Knee, to take two examples of American led massacres, actually happened. The closest thing I can come up with is that some right wing Japanese refuse to acknowledge the Rape of Nanking and other crimes Imperial Japan committed in China or in other places during WWII or try to minimize them. But I don’t think that the entire Japanese government or public is in such deep denial—I think it is more confined to the hard right.

Yes, and the idea that Turkey is a democracy anymore is at best a farce. Like like many governments in the West or closely allied, there has been a wave of autocratic nationalist politicians voted into office. They pretty much all work off the slogan “Make **** great again”. Some have a stronger hold than others, but they maintain power by getting a significant part of the electorate to:
  1. Believe they’ve unfairly put down no matter the real cause
  2. Define a list of culprate people or slights made to national honor
  3. Establish that they can be the savior. (sound familiar)
For Turkey the Armenian Genocide is one of these national slights and nothing is going to change that soon.
