Hey I was wondering what the catholic/parish life is like in Flagstaff. Is the mass celebrated in a “respectful” way. I would hope we (my family) could go to mass and not be distracted by a showy choir and a bunch of “ministers” running around the altar. Is the Latin mass still offered there? Is there someone you can go to for confession who agrees with the teachings on the church specifically things like contraception and NFP?

Basically I just want to know if there is anyone out there who lives or has lived in Flagstaff and their impression of the catholic life in the area.

My family and I visit Flagstaff once or twice a year and have always been pleased with our visits to the local parish. In fact, they recently completed a new parish building which I hear is beautiful. Father Mowrer is very friendly and usually stands outside before mass to greet people who are visiting. Believe it or not, he can tell if you are visiting as well, which has got to be hard considering how many visiters visit the area. The mass is in my opinion a good mass. He does ask for visitors to raise their hands and say where they are visiting from, but he does this before mass actually starts. Other than that, it’s a basic Novus Ordo mass. I haven’t seen anything that would be a considered an issue. The choir is small, and the music has a latin feel to it, as in a Spanish influence. Very few EMHC’s. Certainly not a parade of people running around. I’ve never done confession there, but I would feel very comfortable doing so.

My family and I also volunteer at a Catholic Youth Camp every year up close to Flagstaff to help do maintenance and Father Mowrer has come to the camp to say mass for us in the chapel. Very humble and friendly Priest.
