No, I don’t think it is a criticism of Pope Francis. I think it is an editorial comment on what many believe to be a change in doctrine and practice (the AL document) in the Catholic Church. When we have an official answer from the dubai, then we will know for certain if anything has been changed in Catholic teaching/ doctrine. But to date, there is no answer.

Maybe the Pope is right, but both sides can’t be right so someone is wrong. The post is only to encourage people to think about if the Pope is in line with God’s Truth - which should be our only concern. I didn’t quote anyone - I wrote this myself.

The Church’s pastoral guidelines on this matter have changed in some dioceses, including Rome itself. So this is without a doubt, beyond question, the desire of Pope Francis.
Other bishops in other dioceses have affirmed that there will be no change in their dioceses and all illicitly remarried couples will have to live as brother and sister in order to receive holy communion.

this would seem to break the church into two camps - has anything like this happened before to your knowledge?

Many times. Hence the various councils and local synods that have been convened throughout history to settle disputes. Actually the first example that comes to mind goes back to the New Testament…a council of apostles and elders was convened as relayed to us in Acts 15. In the end the Holy Spirit will guide the Church to a unified position. I have no doubt of that. The process, however, is sometimes painful.

Eternal salvation cannot be obtained by those who oppose the authority and statements of the same Church and are stubbornly separated from the unity of the Church and also from the successor of Peter, the Roman Pontiff, to whom “the custody of the vineyard has been committed by the Savior.” The words of Christ are clear enough: “If he refuses to listen even to the Church, let him be to you a Gentile and a tax collector;” “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you, rejects me, and he who rejects me, rejects him who sent me;” “He who does not believe will be condemned;” “He who does not believe is already condemned;” “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.” The Apostle Paul says that such persons are “perverted and self-condemned;” the Prince of the Apostles calls them “false teachers . . . who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master. . . bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”

well, of course, this being true, and I agree with it, really doesn’t apply to heretical teachings, I would think, My point is the Holy Father allowing this (news story above) seems to be in direct conflict with the established teaching and what all other popes have said. I am not saying he is a heretic at all, but perhaps there is a reasonable explanation for why he is allowing this. We should find out this year when, hopefully, the dubia is resolved. Let’s pray that it all works out.
