Hi,
I understand that Pope Francis has given all priests the ability to lift the excommunication that is automatic for a person who has or facilitates an abortion. However, since you are only excommunicated if you knew that such a penalty existed, what about people who did not know the penalty existed? They are guilty of abortion but are not excommunicated. Have priests ever needed any special permission to forgive the sin of abortion when excommunication was not an issue?
